Can we complain to UK press about inaccurate reporting?

In the UK can we complain to the press about not using pronouns based on biological sex?

So so sick of it, everywhere I look.

First article link is a man and his violent crimes. Does say he's trans but is referred to as she/her. These are not our crimes.

Second link is an article about a witness seeing a building fall down, the witness was CLEARLY a man wearing woman face, but was referred to as a woman with she pronouns. It's constant idiocy, witness is clearly a man.

Surely press/news have a responsibility to be accurate?

Apologies if this has been asked before. But I'm at a point where I'm so irritated by it I want to complain every time I see an in accuracy. Are there any guidelines anywhere we can use for a quick complaint?

Oh Nikki. I think the BBC did a number on him. As an eyewitness to the building collapsing, possibly the only one, it made sense to interview him. Publishing his photo though? It just potentially held him up to ridicule. In fact, arguably, they could have omitted his name and pronouns completely. Just referred to an eyewitness. Maybe he only agreed to speak on condition that his name and picture was published?

I don't know if we can complain. The last I heard, if the organisation is signed up to the Press thingy, the style guide recommends, possibly mandates, using preferred pronouns.

Eta. I did Google Nikki, jic he was one of these manly women we're suddenly hearing about. He was interviewed about giving up smoking (kudos) so he could undergo reassignment surgery of some fashion.

Some newspapers are signed up to the regulator IPSO. Not all are - the Guardian, for example, isn't, and if you want to complain to the Guardian you have to write to their readers' editor.

Broadcasters such as the BBC are regulated by OFCOM.

Historically both OFCOM and IPSO have been worse than useless.

AddMoreJam · 29/03/2026 11:15

IPSO are pretty useless, but the editorial guidelines require accuracy, so that is the best framing for the complaint

Not enough of us complain - we should be complaining all the time about this BS. Women's Rights Network shared some instructions on how to do that which is different for different publications

Yes. Complain first to the editor and then to IPSO if the newspaper is a member.
The first clause of the Editors' Code of Practice is all about accuracy, and it's not accurate to describe men as women.

Yes. I don’t think that report is obfuscatory, the photo and description are clear enough.

Whatchamacallitt · 03/04/2026 20:52

I only use actual sex pronouns for people but find the use of female pronouns for a violent male criminal far more offensive than for the random bystander to a building collapse.

This article is interesting and, I believe, pertinent to the thread

I'm not too bothered about Nikki upthread but there's no arguing that the report is in accurate. Lies are passing (unlike Nikki) unchallenged, reported uncritically by the press. Also the poor chap who's missing. Just acknowledge he's a man. There's degrees of harm but it's all harm,
