I've no idea what's prompted this. Doesn't seem to say in the article which just restricts itself to hand wringing. I'm a little cynical about tras catatrophising.

Activists and members of the transgender community take part in a demonstration against the proposed Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill in Hyderabad on 18 March 2026.

Transgender Bill: India parliament passes amendment to redefine transgender identity amid protests

The bill seeks to change how transgender people are legally recognised and their right to self-identify.

India had its own Hijra/third sex culture before the imposition of American style transgenderism and that didn't involve men self identifting into women's spaces.

  • Redefinition of "Transgender": The amendment narrows the definition to include specific socio-cultural identities (Hijra, Kinnar, Aravani, Jogta) and biological variations (intersex), explicitly excluding those who identify as transgender based on self-perception or personal, non-medicalized gender journey.

It looks like they’re tightening the definition of “trans” for identification purposes and, in theory at least, to allow anti-discrimination measures to apply. You’ve got to define a term before you can argue about its application.

It does seem to exclude the self ID brigade, so instead of “trans” being anything from “full reassignment surgery” to “I put on rainbow dungarees today so I’m non-binary”, it’s just the reassignment end of things.

Of course, I’m sure this will be met with howls of “literal erasure” at the idea of not qualifying as “proper trans”.

It is interesting that countries who have adopted self-ID are now amending the legislation. This has happened in Portugal recently and there are proposals in Ireland to restrict how GRCs are applied when it comes to prisons, for example.

Interesting, so self ID was introduced in 2014 and now they are going to remove it, seems like good news. No mention of any issues re womens rights (but then it is a BBC article) I wonder if any womens rights groups had a hand in making this change happen, does anyone know?

The clenched fist on that poster shows the tolerant nature of those men people 🙄

This is a very good point.

If as activists claim, once done everything would be fine, the world would now be happily flowing forward with self ID and no issues. But it doesn't work, it leads to issues and problems, it exploits what was previously protected, and then work has to happen to reverse it.

I wonder if we will ever see changes in the countries that have really gone batshit, such as Canada and Australia
