Jaw dropping what she was put through

What they accused her of, so bass ackward, they could be the dictionary definition of DARVO.

Yes. My body is me is a delightful and completely inclusive book. There is absolutely nothing controversial in it. It does, by implication only, gently suggest that body modification is unnecessary for someone's looks to be acceptable. For this to be called 'extreme ideology', a 'hateful worldview', and akin to 'terrorist propaganda' is ridiculous.

lcakethereforeIam · 16/03/2026 15:06

The glee in this (I expect they thought the title they came up with was so clever and so funny) is just vile

Another email to Solomons from the assistant chief executive – sent in December 2019 and titled, “Wrapping up Rachel Rooney for Christmas” – revealed that they had “deliberately left out any mention of restraint of trade” in correspondence with Rooney.

If it's not too late and if she can be arsed I donate to a crowdfunder to see the smiles wiped off these bigots' faces.

A sad story, it shows how insular the publishing industry is, I would of thought the only thing that mattered when it came to what gets published is what will sell or not, how wrong I was.

I'm glad to hear the power of the self appointed gatekeepers of knowledge is declining, but it does make me glad that there are already a million books that have been published, so you can chose from them and not just those that have been published recently, because I don't think you can trust anything that's been published by such a captured industry.

I hope she ends up finding something to hope about again, maybe she could write a poem that vilifies the Society of Author's, revenge is a rhyming dish served cold. 🤔

MrsOvertonsWindow · 16/03/2026 15:50

It's tragic that the vindictive bullies get to triumph because organisations like the Society of Authors & Anderson Press have ended up on the wrong side of history feting the #nodebate bullies.

This is absolutely shocking but I can't say it surprises me that TRAs and their allies are so downright nasty. Poor Rachel- she has done nothing wrong but her critics still decided to get their knickers in a knot about her. Why on earth don't they stand up for her? All this carp could have been nipped in the bud sharpish if people stood together and refused to kow tow. What is wrong with them? And the person who said there'd be a 'target' on their back if they showed support?
This sounds almost like a form of terrorism

Yet there has been recent news of a 'trans friendly' author of YA fiction allegedly I must emphasise- in possession of child exploitation material?

TRAs not commenting??

Whatchamacallitt · 16/03/2026 18:06

I thought her book was lovely. It might not be enough to help every child but if it helps just one that's a good thing. It certainly isn't going to do any damage so for what possible reason could anyone object to it?

MoistVonL · 16/03/2026 18:30

It's a delightful book - I've bought 5 copies since it first cam out. I give to every small child I know for their third birthday.

We live in a very multicultural area and I have a physical disability. I love that the book celebrates all the bodies my young neighbours will see around them. It's a joyful, compassionate book.

"You're born in your body, you don't have a spare.
So love it and hug it and treat it with care."

I can see why the loonies went ape, no room for the rubbish idea that you're born in the wrong body with that 😂.
I prefer RR's view of the world, truly inclusive.

I would donate to a crowdfunder for Rachel Rooney to have a large wodge of money to do whatever she fucking well wanted to do that would lift her spirits.

E.g. enough money to buy a huge yacht and have fun playing tag around the oceans with JKR. Or a kennel in the form of Neuschwanstein Castle for her dog Buzz. Or....

Anything that would go even a small way to compensate for what she has been so disgracefully put through...

It’s so awful. Her writing is so beautiful and she was hounded out of doing something she was so good at that brought so much joy. I can imagine her books and her reputation being restored and remembered, long after these mad times are over. But sadly it all comes too late. What’s the good of saying maybe the woman had a point years down the line?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/03/2026 07:29

I've been familiar with this awful story for years. The behaviour of the publishing industry disgusts me. Thank god for J. K. Rowling, probably the only author in the UK who couldn't be cancelled. I believe some of the junior staff at one of her publishers tried having a tantrum some years ago and saying they would refuse to work on her books any more. Because of the enormous sums of money involved, that publisher (Hachette?) had no trouble locating its spine and told them they were free to leave if they had any issues of conscience doing their assigned work. No idea if they did or not.

I think it's important context to mention that Clara Vulliamy has a trans-identified adult child (MTF). This is so often a factor.

Beowulfa · 17/03/2026 14:48

Exactly the kind of story Private Eye should have covered, but they mysteriously ignored....

MoistVonL · 17/03/2026 15:25

It's hard to square such a lovely storyteller as Shirley Hughes with the vindictive pill her daughter turned out to be.

And her misogynistic, entitled grandson, Leah/Ed.

I have just read this and think it is horrifying that the writing career of such a special children’s writer has been destroyed. In fact it seems she has been all but destroyed.

Her books do not say anything about ‘gender’ anyway.

What sort of country is this?

We had My Body is Me, and now I have just seen other lovely books. I have ordered another.

It has arrived:
”The Language of Cat and other poems”.

It is first rate. It isn’t just cute rhymes. It is very, very fine poetry for children with charming illustrations by Ellie Jenkins. No wonder it won an award.

It hasn’t anything remotely transphobic in it by the way.
