Thank goodness for small mercies! Sport is useful for entry-level peaking I think.

Forester1 · 15/03/2026 18:18

It’s what peaked me

partystress · 15/03/2026 19:38

Good. Tim Harford is so logical and good at debunking bad stats, I’d have been very disappointed if it went the other way.

puffyisgood · 15/03/2026 21:52

Not really a deep dive in such a short piece but i was encouraged by the language they used (only saying 'cis' when quoting another study, and providing an explanation of the term, using 'women' in the traditional sense multiple times) and by the overall measured tone.

Spaghettea · 15/03/2026 21:58

Thank goodness. I was hoping Tim and the MOL team would cover this.

Tim Harford always seems very sensible, so I’m glad they’ve produced this.

The were using simple factual language e.g. that a transwoman is someone born male so did not use that dreadful activist language phrase of "assigned male at birth".

And they actually sounded a bit sheepish about using cis. It was quite refreshing - especially from the BBC.

I agree and I can then talk to people about the issue by saying something like “so you accept that “transwomen” are biological men?” and this makes it easier to lead into single sex spaces, safety and dignity.

Thanks for highlighting this, an excellent series and always worth a listen. Great that someone at the BBC can talk sense.

It's the BBC's annual acknowledgement that sex is real so they can point to something to claim balance. Normal service will resume.

I think that might be unduly cynical. There was never a grand conspiracy to impose gender ideology. It was just a perverse institutional dynamic created by their over-attendance to aspects of obligations relating to inclusivity and diversity, which left them intensely vulnerable to capture.

They've clearly begun to unpick these institutional failings, and I'm pretty hopeful we are set sail on a course for greater realism.

Reddit is divided, some very sensible comments but generally voted into oblivion https://www.reddit.com/r/transgenderUK/comments/1rv9v71/more_or_less/

Cynical maybe, but what has been going on at the Beeb extends far beyond a perverse dynamic.
Listen to Stephen Nolan's Stonewalled podcast, or read the SEEN in Journalism blogs on the Beeb's capture.
News stories had to go through the LGBTQ+ desk, who vetoed anything which didn't push the trans ideology. Then there is the endless stream of drag queens.

See new Women’s Hour thread, where true to form, it’s invited a trans-identifying man on to talk about misogyny.

PersonIrresponsible · 17/03/2026 17:25

Good.

NZ sending a 40 year old man to the Olympics is the reason I peaked.

Cheaters gotta cheat.

Igmum · 17/03/2026 17:37

I love More or Less. Definitely looking forward to listening to this one!

popery · 17/03/2026 18:03

Short and sweet. Would have been good to have clarity on whether all trans women in the studies were required to have any hormone/physical treatment to be included in the studies, or whether people who are trans due to gender identity only were also in there.
