Bristol Council again : leader openly defies EHRC instruction

Quelle surprise, Bristol again...

At a Full Council meeting last night, a member of the public pointed out that Good Law Project had lost to the EHRC and that the latter have made is clear, repeatedly, that organisations must follow the law and that there is no need to wait for guidance.

The leader of the council, Tony Dyer of the Green Party, says "I repeat, we are going to wait for Her* Majesty's Government. ie wait for guidance, contrary to what the regulator has said.

So brazen!

*Call the cops, there's been a misgendering!

After @goodlawproject lost their High Court challenge to @EHRC, the equality law regulator reiterated that no organisation should be waiting for their guidance. They should follow the law now.

There's none so deaf than those which don't went to hear. The law is the law - I've no idea why the Green Party thinks it can ignore it because there isn't a Janet & John 'how to' guide accompanying it

Can a councillor be sued for ignoring the law or do we need to sue the council as a body?

forget it jake its chinatown GIF

Bristol and Brighton make me think of this every time

I’d wondered this - especially where he has made such a clear statement that he intends to ignore the current laws. There really needs to be some level of personal accountability

WallaceinAnderland · 11/03/2026 17:05

Apart from saying that they intend to ignore the law, what laws are they actually breaking?

IwantToRetire · 11/03/2026 17:58

Sadly so are mosts councils.

So maybe no surprise in Bristol, but it is really worrying that so many councils are just carrying on as though the Supreme Court ruling and the reason High Court judgement just haven't happened.

Or if they do acknowledge them, just use the failure of the Labour Government to put the guidelines in place as the rationale for them not doing anything.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 11/03/2026 18:05

Tbh a lot of councils ignore laws in a lot of areas if it's cheaper and more convenient to do so. Social care is a classic example - councils frequently break the law and rely on ppl not being informed enough of their rights/not having the wherewithal to take them on.

so I'm not surprised that councils are ignoring it. It's just so endlessly tedious to have to fight every single battle over and over

however labour are tacitly condoning this by their failure to lay the guidance before Parliament when they know lots of organisations are using it as an excuse to do nothing

MsGreying · 11/03/2026 18:56

Green?

"Tony Dyer of the Green Party, says "I repeat, we are going to wait for Her* Majesty's Government."

Didn't a representative of his/her* Majesty's Government say everyone should follow the law, there was no need to wait for the guidance.

They've probably decided to 'trans' the King. Off with his head. 😂

They are idiots! It’s embarrassing who they have to pander to men- even on international women’s day

Some time ago, I was regretfully forced to the conclusion that overall, the Green Party is really not very bright.
Not bright & dangerously credulous.

A while ago, when the councillors in Bristol walked out en mass, the question being asked, by the council's own previous compliance officer, was pointing out that the council were setting themselves up for heavy fines for this.
This nonsense started when Labour were in control, and the Greens are continuing it.
