So the san Pablo trans study has dropped and its bullshit results say that theirs no difference between men with special identities and women.

Yet the authors have already admitted major flaws qith their study and most sprts scientists are already calling it outas the bs it is however Dr Blair Hamilton of Manchester Metropolitan University claims that more muscle mass doesn't mean more strength 🤪

Trans athletes have no advantage over women, study claims

Researchers argue there is no evidence to justify a blanket ban on transgender athletes competing against women

Commenting on the study, Alun Williams, a professor of sport and exercise genomics at Manchester Metropolitan University, said the research “suffers from several problems”, including that fitness levels were not tracked over time and before treatment began.
He said the strength tests relied on “voluntary effort” and so should be “treated sceptically”, especially as the trans women had more muscle mass, while it was “almost worthless to compare groups without tight assessment of training history”.

The strength tests relied on voluntary effort. By men who need to be seen as weaker than they are, in order to continue competing against women.

That alone makes the research worthless.

NotMyRealAccount · 04/02/2026 08:32

Someone in the comments nailed it. Propaganda, not evidence. It's not original research, it's a meta-analysis of a bunch of very flawed studies with scope for bias to be introduced at various points in the process.

Whatever, these men are still men and should compete in their own sex class. Other men whose athletic performance is at the slower/weaker end of the curve aren't clamouring to be in women's competition.

Using Imane Khelif in the article was a poor example. He is not transgender, he is a man with a DSD.

ZeldaFighter · 04/02/2026 08:33

"Dr Blair Hamilton, research associate in applied sport and exercise physiology at Manchester Metropolitan University, said the study highlighted that “you can’t assume that having slightly more muscle automatically means having better sporting performance”.

He added that to know how something affects elite athletes, “you really need elite athletes to study,"

I thought Dr Blair Hamilton was a transgender woman? Referred to as He with a typically male picture. I wonder if it has anything to do with a ban on being the goalkeeper for the national England University football team.

SabrinaThwaite · 04/02/2026 09:08

Preprint of the study is here:

https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.05.05.25326994v1.full

Of the 51 studies incorporated, only 15 included any physical activity assessment. The list of limitations includes short study durations (<3 years), a lack of data on elite athletes and the potential conflation of trained and untrained individuals.

Definitely a bloke, judging by photos.

Helleofabore · 04/02/2026 09:47

Huh…. So absolutely no why to check if these male ‘athletes’ performed below their maximum at all and no tracking.

Also interesting to note that they didn’t do a section on skeletal differences. And we were assured this week by two male posters that their skeletons ‘configured’ to be completely female with estrogen. I kid you not. So I would like to have seen evidence of this but was told to google as there was plenty… strange because if this was documented, it would have been included in this study.

In fact, the authors noted structural differences remain as per a study from Dr Lundberg but stated that they were irrelevant because they said strength was similar and swerved into reminding people of all the stigmatisation that these male athletes face.

MoistVonL · 04/02/2026 09:47

The university refers to Hamilton as They on the website, and he looks to get 'masculine presenting' so I'm guessing de-transitioned to non-binary from transwoman?

Not that it matters, his research is still absolute bobbins.

lcakethereforeIam · 04/02/2026 10:17

Even his support for this rehash identifying as something new seems decidedly lukewarm.

Well he was playing on a woman football team even after the ban so any detransitioning must be recent or hes trying to hide his bias

What a surprise, this study is shite. I do commend the Telegraph for the photo they have chosen to use to illustrate it.

flyingbuttress43 · 04/02/2026 11:13

It doesn't actually matter if the study is rubbish or worthy, the only criteria for women's sports should be that you must be a women, which trans women are not.

PriOn1 · 04/02/2026 14:00

So the “news” is that a man who wants to play in a women’s sports team has collected selective evidence in an attempt to get his way.

And as @LeftieRightsHoarder has pointed out, via Alun Williams, any other man in a similar situation has a vested interest in pretending to be weaker or slower that they are.

Add that to the obvious fact that anyone choosing to lie about their sex is inherently untrustworthy and you have a perfect storm of self-interested dishonesty.

Myalternate · 04/02/2026 15:30

‘Landmark study’…a Highly influential, groundbreaking piece of research that fundamentally transforms the understanding of, treatment or approach within a specific field…

Forgive me, but I had to laugh 😂

How were they able to distinguish between the dress up men and the women?

I remember an article about a young boy that claimed he was a real girl competing in a US college race. The College were so determined to prove that the TG didn’t have an advantage and he finished somewhere in the middle of the competitors.
However when competing in a race with another college team, he came 1st. Suddenly he had gained such super ability to outperform real girls.

SamphiretheTervosaur · 04/02/2026 15:33

I despair

Its another study that I couldn't have let my students get away with. As Emma Hilton, and others, have been explaining, its flaws are myriad and absolutely deadly

Basically it's shite!

deadpan · 04/02/2026 15:33

Blair Hamilton is probably a "they" because he can't make his mind up

highame · 04/02/2026 20:10

I can't believe this 'research' has seen the light of day. I'd be too embarassed. They, clearly are not. They should lay off the booze and re-read they's work

HildegardP · 04/02/2026 20:32

@ZeldaFighter Hamilton's MMU bio they/thems him so presumably his "gender journey" has now staggered to enbie like so many others.

MsGreying · 05/02/2026 10:05

Who is still pushing for this utter nonsense?

Helleofabore · 05/02/2026 10:11

The people who want male people to compete in female sports categories. They no doubt sent this when it was in pre print to the IOC for consideration.

Chersfrozenface · 05/02/2026 10:24

The BMJ Group, despite publishing the thing, wants us all to know that at the same time it has nothing to do with it and is not to blame if it's a pile of crap.

There was a time [20 year ago] when the BMJ was widely respected for the quality and rigor of its published papers and articles. Alas that is no longer true.

That stamp is actually quite funny, they clearly know its a bs study thats not worth the paper its written on and are attempting to avoid the incoming ridicule and backlash.
I guess the question should be why punish such an obviously flawed study.

Apparently it's often added to preprints, which this is.
