Nonsense from the BTO

Email received with a questionnaire - Learning More About Our Community.

I should have expected it really - but it's the BTO! The British Trust for Ornithology. A scientific community (you would hope!) And they are waffling on about gender shite.

My answer is in the image attached. I left q11 blank...

Nonsense from the BTO

I think all these organisations must just import these forms & things from outside and not consider what they're actually asking. Maybe some think 'ooh, this makes us look cool and relevant' when it just makes them look daft, who knows?

It's totally unscientific but so is the nonsense the NHS puts out, ditto the British Medical Association and others who you'd hope would know better.

Just keep writing the truth.

Perhaps you're right. In which case the lack of critical thinking baffles me.

I generally assume the team that creates this rubbish is based at home, so they never discuss anything properly, and are straight out of university, which let's face it are gender machines nowadays.

What baffles me is why they want to collect this information and how they intend to use it.

I can’t seen how it complies with GDPR

kinkytoes · 31/01/2026 08:19

@Brainworm it passes GDPR because it's anonymous.

But I agree, it seems like useless information.

I wonder how many others will make a comment similar to mine... I'm glad there was a free text space available as there often isn't.

With yougov I tend to ignore the question and comment right at the end, but I've lost count of how many times I've done that. They never change it.

You should have put, “I put red lipstick on my tits and identify as a robin.”

😆 good one. I'm not that quick at 6.30 in the morning.

Ah, that explains the GDPR element - thanks.

This still shouldn’t let them off the hook for collecting it.

Some seem to think that, somehow, it’s inclusive to collect DEI data. Unless the data collected can inform action that will genuinely improve inclusion or outcomes for those with protected characteristics , it amounts to virtue signalling or really poor strategy.

It’s hard to imagine what they could usefully do with gender identity data.

😂the 'laughing with tears in my eyes' emoji is completely accurate, I'm wiping them away after reading this!

They should have asked 2 distinct questions.

Yes, this.

Supposing they found that they were getting very few women or very few men becoming members and they wanted to try to redress the balance (or at least investigate potential reasons why), they could use several ways to specifically approach members of the group they wanted to target.

However, if they wanted to focus their approach on people who were agender or non-binary... your guess is as good as mine.

Can they identify you?
