Former Head of Culford accused of fraud.

The interesting point is what isn’t being mentioned.

BBC Look East just now included a section about Julian Johnson-Munday. He is accused of fraud, because it is claimed he’d used a school credit card to pay for tickets to Lords and hotel accommodation.

He was suspended from his job 3 years ago.

They showed film of him close-up and also queuing to get into the court building. No comment on his appearance, but the way he looked, including his hair being curled into short ringlets, caused me to look online for more.

Here’s an article on the BBC website. It starts with a photo presumably taken when he was still at Culford. If you didn’t look lower down you might miss today’s photo. The article describes what he was wearing, but nothing more.

How many of them are there?

Photos are so deceptive. This footage usefully shows how massive this guy is, male pattern baldness and walk - I always associate that sort of gait with smart suits, cuff links and manly guffaws. sorry about the ads and watch in full screen

I wonder if this is the digger in question?
Glad to find my suspicions about correlation of wardrobe and gait appear to be confirmed… super pinstripe suit there….

Johnson-Munday, of The Pound, Burnham Market, Norfolk, appeared at Norwich Crown Court on Monday (February 23) for a plea and trial preparation hearing (PTPH).

Although the hearing was adjourned until April 9 and the charges were not put to him, a trial date was fixed for February 21, 2028.

The defendant, who was represented by Tom Parker, spoke only to confirm his details in the short hearing

He's in The Times today. Very interesting that the news articles I have looked at refer to him as 'him'. The Times appear to go out of their way though not to use 'he', instead using his name 5 times in a relatively short article.

Blimey, the BBC uses 'he/his'!

Below a photo of the accused with very female-coded accessories.

Julian Johnson-Munday stands outside the court under a spotted umbrella. He has shoulder-length wavy hair and is wearing a scarf, a beige checked jacket and beige gloves.

It's weird that a judge would allow that or at the very least not comment on its inappropriateness for a court hearing.

If the judge did not allow a male defendant to wear clothes that would have been allowable for a female defendant, that would have been sex discrimination.

That's one good thing FWS has done for trans people: they have the protected characteristic of (birth) sex, even with a GRC.

When I said:

If the judge did not allow a male defendant to wear clothes that would have been allowable for a female defendant, that would have been sex discrimination.

it turns out I was wrong. In GLP v EHRC, the Judge cites a case where an employee lost on exactly this point. There is no sex-discrimination in telling someone that they must dress conventionally for their sex.

I was just coming on to post that THE BBC is misgendering ...

The BBC!

Only to discover you all knew about this story in January!

Never mind, at least we women won't get the blame for his crimes....

bluenova · 10/04/2026 15:46

The article in the times today he/hims him. Trial is in 2028!

SternJoyousBeev2 · 10/04/2026 16:16

Has he actually declared a trans identity or is just an old fashioned cross dresser? Haven’t seen anything about a different name other than Julian being used.

The interesting point is what isn’t being mentioned.

I'm not sure I understand why you think this is an interesting omission. Are you saying that you think that his trans identity should be mentioned? Or are you simply commenting on the use of correct pronouns?

I can't think of any reason why his trans identity needs mentioning in this context.

Yeah this. We don't want them calling him 'she'. By describing the clothes it's saying he's a trans woman but not calling him female which seems perfectly reasonable. It makes no odds if he's trans or not. It's not like it was a sex crime or violence against women or girls?

@junipery said in a post in February that JJ-M's lawyer had asked the court to use 'they/them' pronouns at the earlier hearing. However, I can't find any mention of pronouns, or a more recent photo, in the media coverage of the most recent hearing.

Suffolk News does give the defendant's name as Julian Frances Johnson-Munday in its headline. (I can't see the story without registering.) Note, Frances, the feminine form, rather than Francis. Whereas Companies House has Julian Francis Johnson-Munday under Culford School (Trading Trust) Limited, with the address Headmasters Lodge, Culford School, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP28 6TX, from the period before he resigned.

Also, Julian was at one time a female name, as in Julian of Norwich - again note that the hearing took place in Norwich, and Suffolk News in January gave his address as St Benedict's Street, Norwich.

Edited for typo

I’m curious to know why he appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court if the school is in Suffolk and that’s where he resided?

The web tells me that fraud cases are often heard at Westminster Magistrates' Court. In this case for the first hearing, evidently.
