Complex with Kimberley Wilson

I heard Kimberley Wilson on the BBC Sounds "What's Up Docs" podcast talking about black and white thinking, and I thought "here's a woman who seems to know what she's talking about". I've started listening to her podcast about mental health (called Complex) and there is some rather refreshing viewpoints so far, which surprised me from the BBC... For example, in the episode on people pleasing she mentioned sex differences then went on to speak about women (you know, the old fashioned "cunty" ones as Gervais would say 😜).

I guess I'm comparing it to my previous experience of the "Child" BBC podcast which I stopped listening to after the episode on mothers which just HAD to mention drag mothers and had a they/them woman talking about how it's ableist to tell women not to take certain meds to during pregnancy 🤯

Anyone else noticed a whiff of sex realism about Kimberley? Either way, she's an AWESOME and my new favourite heroine*

*Disclaimer: I haven't listened to all of the podcast episodes yet 😂

Oh yes! I was going to make a post on this.

I listened to the people pleasing one and the ocd one came on afterwards.

they actually stated that ocd intrusive thoughts could lead to one thinking you’re trans (in different language) amongst a list of other things. The case study they used to illustrate it was of a young man who got engaged and immediately started getting ocd intrusive thoughts that he was gay. He knew he wasn’t and really wanted to get married to his future wife but needed help with the repetitive intrusive thoughts.

I quite like her stuff. Occasionally listen to her podcast. She’s a way of reassuring you you’re not nuts, everyone has a bit of what ever issue she’s discussing, whilst acknowledging that the specific mental health difficulty can be really hard but there are definitely ways to change perceptions, get support and not be a slave to them.

it was a piece years ago on introception and autism with the VT twins that introduced me to her. It’s an area that needs more thought and support put into it for children especially those who have autism, sensory processing difficulties and adhd (or an undefined send need).

I listened to the time blindness one hoping to be reassured I normal and not linked to adhd (I’m on a mission to prove I’m not! But probably am.) but it is 😁. It’s also sometimes normal too…. 🤪

I quite like how they’re not pigeon holing everything into summative diagnoses

The burn out one was good.

am going to listen to the body image one

Bingo - first episode discusses pushing back against labels and self diagnoses. Normalising wide ranges of human experience and not pathologising normal human reactions and behaviours

Haha yes I finished the OCD one today and noticed the mention of thinking you're the opposite sex. Everything I've heard so far I like, and I'm really looking forward to the one on channeling female rage 💪🏻
