It is definitely one of the BBC's better offerings. I think Seen in Journalism have a fairly positive regard for Alison Holt. BBC still getting it badly wrong elsewhere though (Darlington nurses reporting), and will never admit to their part in the gaslighting of women over the last few years.

FranticFrankie · 21/01/2026 14:09

Interesting how Sex Matters is referred to as a gender critical campaign group whilst Translucent - simply referred to as trans rights campaigners
Hmm
But at least it's the beeb

BendoftheBeginning · 21/01/2026 15:36

It quite an improvement on most BBC women’s rights coverage - and about time, too. Onwards and upwards!

ItsCoolForCats · 21/01/2026 17:37

From the article:

With each legal case, the pressure increases on the government to publish the EHRC guidance - or reject it and tell people why it has done that.
Joanne Moseley says that, while in her view the Darlington ruling correctly interprets the Supreme Court's judgement, the lack of official advice is "causing confusion".
She warns that if a staff member does take legal action against a company, it will "not help any organisation's defence to say they were waiting for guidance".

Indeed.

You see BBC, you can do it if you try Grin

SwirlyGates · 21/01/2026 17:49

A reasonable article for once! There is hope yet.

Jolynot happy:

When I was trying to 'sell in' to the BBC the YouGov survey we commissioned, showing a terrifying collapse in confidence amongst the UK's trans population, I was repeatedly told that Alison Holt who wrote this mess 👇🏻 was the closest the Beeb had to anyone interested in fairness on the issue.

I’m pleased because there are still so many people who can’t see the harm in ‘being kind’ and don’t believe the things like (gestures widely at assorted binfires of batshittery) keep happening because they’re not reported on the BBC, or are buried in obscure sections and/or feature confusing language. But harassed nurses and sustained loss of dignity is a clear signal to all.

Interesting how both Jolly One and India totally miss the notion that an Oxford Professor of Law is a legit person to ask about, ooh, I dunno - the Law??? Which was what happened here.

Silly BBC speaking to an academic whose specialism is equality and anti-discrimination law, when instead they could have interviewed a former tax barrister. Or India Willoughby.

Or a drag queen

BundleBoogie · 21/01/2026 23:07

Maybe in some parts of the BBC. The write up of Jennifer Melle’s case was poor.

Yes, and at least twice they explained that a transwoman is male which is good as anyone who does not know might well think a transwoman means a woman who is trans.

With gritted teeth as their quote was added? 🙃

The gender critical women's campaign group Sex Matters said this "should have been common sense" but it was "relieved and delighted" by the tribunal's findings.

Translucent points to two other recent employment tribunals, which it says are consistent with Darlington in showing that "employers have a duty to cater for trans people and gender-critical people in providing workplace facilities, so that everyone can be accommodated".

Did someone fail to read to the end?

Or

emmmm... errr.... deny the existance of emmmm...the trans people quoted

Yes, and at least twice they explained that a transwoman is male which is good as anyone who does not know might well think a transwoman means a woman who is trans.

And pointed out that the other employee used alternative provision¹.

¹assumption that was not a women using the male changing rooms.
