This ET is covered in several newspapers:
Disabled university worker 'who had career sabotaged' after she misgendered trans colleague due to her 'short term memory problems' was discriminated against, judge rules | Daily Mail Online

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/695fb8b944a6f04b0a5a5aba/Ms_K_Sylvester_v_Stuart_Phillpson___others_-2400241_2024-_Judgment.pdf

More information on what went on starts around pg 17 of the judgement.

Disabled worker who misgendered colleague 'was discriminated against'

Karenne Sylvester, 56, was found to have 'harassed' her colleague after an investigation by the University of Manchester - but has now successfully sued.

Thanks for sharing. Ms Sylvester clearly did really well presenting her case in person, appearing against counsel for the Respondents. I thought the judgment was well-written and clear - albeit depressing reading. It is particularly telling - though not news in any way - that the Respondents had made an effort to consult their EDI colleagues about transgender issues but had not done so about disability issues. Yet again, disability is relegated to the bottom of the heap. So infuriating.

DrSpartacularsMagnificentOctopus · 12/01/2026 21:25

Very impressed that she represented herself, but what an ordeal for her to go through.

I hope she finds a way to do her dream PhD.

JaquelineHide · 12/01/2026 21:36

There's clearly a hierachy of protected characteristics. Disability is so often at the bottom, possibly because it takes actual effort, rather than slogans and trying to get people to believe bullshit. It makes me so cross but I'm glad this lady won.

ArabellaScott · 12/01/2026 21:57

So the Uni of Manchester has a hierarchy of PCs.

RedToothBrush · 12/01/2026 22:23

The Uni of Manchester forgot how biology, law and history work.

Oops.

Seriestwo · 12/01/2026 23:05

This is fucking ridiculous.

im so tired of these fragile non-adults bent able to drag good people through the courts because no one around them will stand up to them.

It's a question I'd be asking if a young relative or friend were to go to an open day there.

MarieDeGournay · 12/01/2026 23:41

I read through the judgement with increasing astonishment?frustration?anger?
that so many people went to so much trouble and, in the Claimant's case, was put through so much turmoil and distress, just because somebody called a biological female 'she'.

This is how corrosive gender ideology is. This is the waste of time, effort and emotion is causes/

I note that the offended party, a woman who identifies as a man, reacted to the misgendering incident by crying.
She obviously identifies as a man who is admirably in touch with his feelings..

eatfigs · 13/01/2026 00:48

I'm very glad she won, but disappointed that the decision is infused with trans ideological language that it considers as truth. Like "transitioned from a woman to a man", "misgendering", "incorrect pronoun use" - we've a long way to go before this sexist nonsense is seen for what it is.

UtopiaPlanitia · 13/01/2026 01:17

Thanks for including the link to the judgement OP, I find it very enlightening to read these documents.

Chersfrozenface · 13/01/2026 06:48

I noticed that CD is described in the judgement as having been "a member of causal [sic] staff".

Note to drafters: a spell checker isn't enough, you need proper proofreading.

Indeed, otherwise philosophy fans would be very disappointed when they turned on the telly to watch CausalityGrin

Brefugee · 13/01/2026 16:26

CD clearly hasn't internalised "boys don't cry". Bit rubbish, eh?

(sorry, flippant. I want to be flippant or i would be wanting to burn the world to the ground)

Someone needs to tell these EDI fuckwits that integration inclues our disabled colleagues.

Spooky! I've just come back to this thread to say I was sorry for being flippant on a serious thread.

I see that Brefugee has got there before me with
I want to be flippant or i would be wanting to burn the world to the ground
which says what I feel perfectly.
Well said!

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 13/01/2026 18:29

Reading between the lines, my guess is CD knew the woman had complained about their appointment, hence their over-the-top reaction to being misgendered.
I'm glad im no longer working, I think it can be difficult to quickly and consistently change how you refer to a colleague. I'd just have to use 'they' for everybody.

UtopiaPlanitia · 18/01/2026 23:18

Having read through the judgement for this case, and halfway through the judgement for the Darlington nurses, all I can say is that there are far too many incapable twits in management these days.

No-one seems to be able to behave in a grown up and objective fashion in dealing with workplace issues. This is what happens when you ignore legislation and let too many activist lobby groups promote 'feelings' as being of primary importance.
