Resulting in poorer information being provided to everyone who uses it. Is this really because of the feelings of 0.02% of the population, or is there another explanation?

Maybe someone who supports the trans argument can explain why it is better to provide poorer health information for everyone? Obesity is far more of an issue for the health service than the mental health of a tiny minority. Wouldn’t a warning have been enough?

From the NHS BMI calc page:

'BMI is just one way to measure health. It cannot tell you if you're carrying too much fat, or if you've got lots of muscle.'

So what is it actually measuring, if it can't tell you if you're carrying too much fat?

Many, many more people have a high BMI because they are carrying too much fat than because they are well muscled. Those who exercise & have well developed muscles will be aware of the reason their BMI is high.

Well, maybe so, but that sentence still makes absolutely no sense. They present a fat-measuring device, and then says it cannot tell you if you're carrying too much fat.

BMI is a measure of whether you are overweight or obese compared to the average. It doesn't measure fat but is a useful rule of thumb & not to be dismissed just because it doesn't accommodate the edge case of a fit athlete. The overwhelming majority of people in the overweight or obese category will be overweight or obese not trained athletes. Claiming your BMI is high because of increased muscle mass is usually as useful as claiming that you weigh a lot because you are big boned.

Men and women are different. The issue here is the default male.

ArabellaSaurus · 06/01/2026 13:14

Actually, the issue is also inconsistency. If its broad brush and a rough idea, fine, but then the obvipus limitations should mean it's not used for diagnostics.

The NHS Healthy quiz has no options for sex and these options for gender:

Well I did mine the other day and selected female and my BMI has now dropped a reasonable amount for exactly the same weight/height/etc.

Me too - by some miracle, not having changed a thing, I am now officially overweight whereas a few days ago I was obese.
