Inadequate pronoun information.

Why is it that people who are so insistent on telling you their pronouns do it so inadequately?
e.g. 'my pronouns are xe/xir' (or whatever), coming from a male.
I assume the Xe is the subjective personal pronoun (equivalent to 'he'), and the Xir is the objective personal pronoun (equivalent to 'him').

What is their possessive pronoun (equivalent to 'his')?
What is their reflexive pronoun (equivalent to 'himself')?

Am I just supposed to guess? Isn't guessing someone's pronouns against the rules?

If you are going all-in on pronouns at least brush up or your grammar and give us all four, making clear which is which in the case of made-up words.

(light hearted post, obvs)

Lol. What I love is how much pronouns are on their way out. Very rarely am I in a meeting or some sort of gathering where one person (smugly) insists on sharing their pronouns, but no one else ever does.

If I'm talking about pronoun-person in a different language, do I use the English made-up pronouns?
Do I use the gendered pronouns of gendered languages if there's no "xe" equivalent in that language?
What about languages where there's no distinction between he/her, is pronoun-person going to feel cancelled? 🤔

Thank goodness if this fad really is on the way out.

I have never been asked for mine, and have sometimes pondered what I would put. Possibly "You may address me in the second person singular".

I/me/my/mine/myself - when I am talking about myself.
If talking to you in your presence I will use the second person singular (or plural as the case may be).

If talking about a third party in their presence I will use their name - because when I was young saying "she" when the person is in the room always got the response "Who is 'she' - the cat's mother?".

When talking about a third party when they are not present - why should they care, they can't hear you!
That is what is so mad about insisting on 'she/her' - these words would only be used when you are not around to hear them!

I mean, the whole thing has not been thought through at all! 😂

I'm not at all transphobic, but I would never use the neo pronouns or whatever they're called

Greyskybluesky · 18/12/2025 13:51

It's not about being 'transphobic' it's about making sense

Daleksatemyshed · 18/12/2025 14:03

Your coworkers pronouns mean nothing to me and wouldn't help me in the slightest. I'd have to call them by name and avoid pronouns altogether. If it really matters to them if someone misgenders them shouldn't they be a bit clearer ?

Going by my DCs who, alas, are into pronouns still, it’s simply rounded up to ‘they’

eg
What is their possessive pronoun (equivalent to 'his')? Theirs
What is their reflexive pronoun (equivalent to 'himself')? Theirs again?

I'm doing an online university course which has a lot of mature students and am always reassured that on a Zoom seminar with 20-30 people only one or two put their pronouns next to their names. (Women who put she/her - like we can't tell) Hopefully they'll get the message that we're not doing that.

Themselves (plural) is the reflexive version - "they are washing themselves".
Not sure you can actually make a singular version. It would remain plural but referring to a single person, e.g. "there is a person over there, I can't see who it is, they are washing themselves."

Wouldn't Xe be offended if you used 'themself' instead of Xirself?
Who can tell? It is a minefield of offense-bombs. Perhaps that is the whole point.
