Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, following her three-decade campaign for women's rights and the abolition of the death penalty in Iran.

She was arrested during a memorial service for a lawyer who died under suspicious circumstances, according to a report by Walla.
Mohammadi had previously served multiple sentences on charges including "spreading propaganda against the Islamic Republic."

Late last year, she was released from Tehran's notorious Evin Prison after her jail term was suspended to allow her to undergo medical treatment.

I'm sure there will be mass demonstrations in support of the oppressed people - notably the women - of Iran in all major cities, every week....

Supporterofwomensrights · 13/12/2025 13:47

Extraordinary bravery. Thank you for posting.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 13/12/2025 13:49

Awful what women are subjected to. She's the very definition of "stunning and brave".

Apart from imprisonment itself, it is this cat and mouse game. ie allowed out, then re-arrested. I wonder how many other occassions something like this has happened.

Iran produces some of the best feminists ever. Raising a glass to the fall of the fall regime, and the liberation of its people.

Update 9 February 2026:

Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has been handed further prison sentences of seven-and-a-half years by an Iranian court, her lawyer has said.

The human rights activist was sentenced to six years for "gathering and collusion", and one-and-a-half years for "propaganda activities" by a court in the north-eastern city of Mashhad, Mostafa Nili announced on social media on Sunday.
....
Mohammadi has already spent more than 10 years of her life in prison. The Narges Foundation says the latest sentence brings the total time she has been ordered to spend in prison to 44 years.
Since 2021, she has been serving a 13-year sentence for "propaganda activity against the state" and "collusion against state security", charges she denies.

The activist was given temporary release from Tehran's notorious Evin prison for three weeks in December 2024 on medical grounds.
She was expected to return to prison soon after, where she was serving multiple sentences.

The most recent arrest came as she attended a memorial for Khosrow Alikordi, a lawyer who had been found dead in his office in early December.

I hate the Regime so much it's unreal.

I hope this Lioness is able to find her revenge, in this life or the next.

Igmum · 02/05/2026 13:05

That poor woman. What astounding bravery against such an evil regime.

womendeserveequalhumanrights · 02/05/2026 13:51

It doesn't feel as if there's anything we can do to support her (and other women there) - is there?

There was discussion about this on another thread but cant remember this.

But something to be aware of, though as said on the other thread, the likelihood of women being able to leave Afghanistan and to then seek asylum is probably low.

there are no legal routes of entry to gain entry into uk now thanks to Mahmood so no way for anyone from Afghanistan coming here

I think it is in reference to those who cross the channel by boat (which they do because the UK refuses to have a process for making a claim whilst in another country).

So that's why the story is about returning "failed" asylum seekers.

But also why on the other thread it is was said that it is unlikely that women would make the very difficult journey when, more so than men) they would be vulnerable to people smugglers pushing them into prostitution etc..

There are real horror stories about women attempting these sort of back door routes.

In an exclusive extract of writing smuggled from prison in Iran, the Nobel peace prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has described the “torture” of solitary confinement, and her systematic medical neglect by the prison system.

The writing from the past decade will be part of a soon to be published memoir that gives a rare and alarming insight into the treatment of Mohammadi, who is in critical condition. It details beatings, constant interrogations, deprivation of medical care and long stretches in solitary confinement during her numerous imprisonments.

“There is no hardship worse than illness combined with imprisonment,” she wrote. “Authoritarian regimes do not always need an executioner’s rope. Sometimes, they simply wait for the human body to fail.”
