New US policy designates NHS abortions as human rights breaches

The US State Department has classified state-funded abortion services, including those provided by the NHS, as human rights violations that it will report on in its annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices. This policy shift marks a fundamental rewriting of America’s approach to global human rights monitoring and places the NHS directly in the crosshairs of US diplomatic scrutiny. Humanists UK has expressed deep alarm at the move.

A senior State Department official described the changes as moving away from ‘group identities’ towards protecting ‘natural rights’ bestowed by ‘God, our creator.’ This theological framing represents a stark departure from the secular, evidence-based approach that has traditionally underpinned international human rights discourse and the US constitutional framework.

Fucking right wing Christian nutjobs.

I have paid into BPAS for years. I'm sure it'll continue to be needed unfortunately.

cestlavielife · 27/11/2025 19:42

The usa has no power over uk law
But it is shocking

BreakingBroken · 27/11/2025 19:47

well, i guess they will lump canada into that boat.
but honestly "who cares" what trump thinks.

The problem is that it's informing our politics too - Farage and his cronies in particular.

Until 2005 you could still get the death penalty in the US for a crime committed under the age of 18.

Currently the US is one of only 55 countries that still have the death penalty.

Not sure that they are great judges of these things.

ILoveHotChocolates · 27/11/2025 19:53

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄and Farage is in bed with this lot. I despair

BreakingBroken · 27/11/2025 19:56

@PinkFootstool this is where the uk needs to realize it's own uk identity and have some pride in it's national history and DUMP the TRUMP and all things US influence (yes that also means any sneaky economic hand outs) be a bit more like the swedes and the fin's.
this from a canadian who is on the front line of trump harassment policies.

This theological framing represents a stark departure from the secular, evidence-based approach that has traditionally underpinned international human rights discourse and the US constitutional framework.

I think what is frightening, is how easily it seems that one US President can so quickly and easily overturn what has been the accepted position of not allowing religious belief to be the basis of US Government policy.

Not forgetting the hypocrasy of a country that is outraged by other countries who use their religion to justify their actions, and will let that use of religion be the basis on which this US Government will ban people from those countries from entering the US.

So not just the act of using a religion to write policy, but making it clear only one religion should be allowed to be the "benchmark".

And they like to sneer at other countries for living in the "dark ages".

If they want to be Iran, they are going the right way about it.

Facist state.

Hedgehogsrightsarehumanrights · 27/11/2025 22:20

This from a “cuntry” that sanctions brutal state murder of living adults.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/11/2025 22:47

OTOH, many of us in the U.K. would be likely to see it as a human rights breach for a woman to not be able to access an NHS abortion - as was (and afaik in practice may still be) in Northern Ireland.

Isnt it about counties enforcing population control? So the report is looking at indicators of states limiting the rights of the population to have families, rather than funding models?

Im thinking of one child policies, or countries limiting who can have children by coercion?

What maybe behind it is the supposed Ultra Christian communities in the US who think women's only role is to have babies.

But the report is about principles.

Its amazing how many people have just fallen for the Trumpian lets make a deal and ignore agreed standards, let alone principles. Like telling Ukraine they are loosers so hand over the land to Russia.

Imagne if Trump was US President duing WWII he would have said to Winston Churchill, your a looser, give up the UK to the Germans.

The report is about the breach of agreed principles in US policy that they are secular.

The US is not a theocracy.

That is the issue for the US at the moment that Trump has no principles.

As has been alleged, his own mother said never let Donald go into politics, he is too stupid.

Whether its stupidity, or game playing, he is an exceedingly dangerous man. I keep remembering he has his finger on the button that could send nuclear weapons against someone who upsets him.

These are the other areas the Trump administration will be looking at:

  • Arrests, administrative penalties, and ‘official investigations or warnings’ for speech;
  • The enforcement of policies like affirmative action of diversity, equity, and inclusion that ‘provide preferential treatment’ to workers on the basis of race, sex, or caste;
  • The facilitation of mass or illegal migration across a country’s territory into other countries;
  • Gender affirming care for minors;
  • State subsidisation of abortions or abortifacient drugs. (They will also be required to note the total estimated number of annual abortions.)

Whether some of these are human rights abuses or a product of religious ideology (or any other ideology) is quite debatable.

Daleksatemyshed · 28/11/2025 07:27

Trump doesn't see us as an ally, he sees us as some weird American add on, he's the big mouthy kid who thinks all his friends agree with him about everything. Time they worked out they really don't speak for every one

Hoardasurass · 28/11/2025 07:51

Its concerning but if the Scottish government's new abortion Bill goes through with sex selective abortions and abortions up to delivery (without medical need) then it will be imho a human rights violation. The abortion laws as they stand now are fine

Bonden · 28/11/2025 07:58

“Weird American add-on” made me smile. He’s a horror of a man.

IwantToRetire · 28/11/2025 18:34

What strange is that news outlets in the US are starting to query whether he has dementia.

But seems to me he is just as incoherent and unable to follow a line of thought as ever. Like a jackdaw just picking up the bits that he thinks are most glittery.

Not just US but world government under the control of a man who thinks life is a tv show.
