How typical of the BBC to be reporting on this as it suits their narrative. Be kind ladies! Let me take your awards.

Claire Sharpe wears a cycling helmet and pink jacket has taken a selfie whilst riding her bike through a rural area. She has blonde hair and is smiling.

Woman refuses Cycling UK award over trans women being left out

Claire Sharpe says she disagrees with Cycling UK only naming biological women in their top 100 list.

"By excluding trans and non-binary people, it's just not doing what I think it was set up to do. It excludes people that have helped create the community that I was nominated for."

Presumably they haven't excluded trans and non-binary identifying women?.

1apenny2apenny · 18/11/2025 18:09

Fine she can move aside and the runner up can get the award.

IdaGlossop · 18/11/2025 18:09

She's from Bristol 😃 This is proof-positive that the political complexion of a local authority infects its citizens.

Be fair to the BBC: the article does mention a woman who wants only biological women cyclists to compete. There's no photo of her though.

Tunnockstester · 18/11/2025 18:15

Anything on the BBC about Sharron Davies and Tracy Edwards setting up Women’s Sports Union?
Not that I can see.

OpheliaWitchoftheWoods · 18/11/2025 18:17

Oh what a good girl she is, performatively patting men's egos.

They'll still eat you, Claire.

moto748e · 18/11/2025 18:43

Never mind, she's polished her credentials, that's the main thing. Is anyone being 'excluded'? I doubt it.

Augarden · 18/11/2025 18:44

Toxic femininity.

junipery · 18/11/2025 18:46

These women are so smug. As well as wrong, obviously.

Soontobe60 · 18/11/2025 18:47

She need to get up off her knees.

Really? Surely it's the other way round, and that the political complexion of a democratically-elected body reflects that of the electorate. Unless I've completely misunderstood how voting works.

The reporting is dire though: "Ms Sharpe said trans women were important players in the sport and urged them not to be disheartened by Cycling UK's decision." a. you don't "play" cycling, and b. Cycling UK has nothing to do with sport - it promotes recreational, utility and transport cycling. Cycling as a sport is the preserve of British Cycling.

My comments are sarcastic in intention.

This has already been extensively discussed here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5438761-cycling-uk-seeing-sense

I'm not sure why you are criticising the BBC for reporting on this controversy - it merits reporting.

I don't think people are criticising the BBC for reporting on the situation at large, I think they're criticising the BBC for showcasing an anti-women campaigners/influencer. Again. It doesn't exactly scream balance or impartiality.

It’s a local news report about a reasonably prominent local cycling campaigner and why she is refusing an award. It looks like a piece of straight reporting so I’m not sure what balance has to do with it. I suppose they could have tracked down someone who was nominated for the Top 100 award and didn’t refuse it? But ‘someone accepts award’ isn’t really newsworthy is it.

I think sometimes the demands for balance go too far - eventually someone will get interviewed after being stuck on a train for 5 hours and the demands will go up that we also have an interview with someone who’s train arrived on time, for balance 🤣

moto748e · 18/11/2025 22:40

That's fair enough, but the BBC have done plenty lately to invite suspicion, to say the least.

ProfessorOfAllTheThings · 18/11/2025 23:11

I just read this and think she sounds really stupid, rather than the noble SJ she clearly intends to come across as.

These women are just so blind to what they're saying. By insisting that no ride could possibly take place without some.men, she is putting off and placing barriers in the way of many women's participation.

And bring non binary into it? Presumably if they're female NB turn they can be get a women's award. Ridiculous.

I think the reporting is good. It clearly states the law more than once and the viewpoint that women having some things for themselves is not the same as men having nothing. For the stupid people at the back.

Your example is ill-posed. A better analogy is an interview with someone who was boycotting the train company because its trains run on time, an outcome with which most people would be pleased.

Justme56 · 18/11/2025 23:28

Looking on line she appears to be a guide for an organisation called sisters in the wild (not her full time job). Sisters in the wild is targeted at women, trans and non-binary - may have some influence on her actions.

My post saying she sounds absolutely stupid has been deleted but if someone doesn't know the difference between men and women then I consider them stupid and ill educated. I can see no issue with me saying so.

moto748e · 19/11/2025 15:15

None of these people are stupid or uneducated. I am certain that this woman knows perfectly well the diffderence between men and women, and that people can't change sex. She is spouting stuff she doesn't believe in because it gives her the approval of the cool kids, and avoids the risk of being seen as an awful person, like that awful Sara Morrison.

BeWaryCat · 20/11/2025 07:24

I’m in the cycling community and there was talk about a year back that this woman had been dismissed from her job from discriminating against a trans woman so I’m not sure why she’s shoving herself into the spotlight over this, surely it’s going to come back and bite her on the ass when they realise she’s not the saint she’s painting herself as. Surprised it’s not come out yet.

What a ridiculous claim to make. The political complexion of a local authority reflects the local population. Not surprising there are a range of views on trans issues in big cities.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 20/11/2025 13:12

@BeWaryCat
It could be that she’s trying to redeem herself in the eyes of the TRAs.
