There's no malign intent here, though, surely. 186 out of 399 Labour MPs are women, so just under half. Is there any evidence to suggest that Labour women act collectively in the same kind of way as the groupings listed? I vaguely recall a news story a while back about a meeting a while back of various women MP's, but I think that may have been a cross-party affair.

[edited to add]

I noticed, when looking up the figures, than the Tory women MPs were really decimated. I thought they used to have quite a few, but now they only have 29.

I wouldn't say malign, but it suggests a complacency about the state of women's issues. There's so much wrong on that front: violence against women and girls, very low levels of rape convictions, incel ideology, the proliferation of violent porn and its effects, poor maternity services, poor support for parents whose children have mental health issues ... etc etc. Perhaps they assume that just having lots of female MPs will take care of women's issues without any focussed or coordinated effort. I don't know.

IwantToRetire · 04/11/2025 00:40

It isn't about representation within the Labour Party, but whether interest groups (tribes) in the Labour Party realistically represent parts of sociey with special needs or experience disadvantage.

Either it is stunning complacency or dissonance when recently as the Government they had made a big issue about the amount of violence against women.

So if the "tribes" represent the personal interest of MPs there seem to be some gaps.

Oh, I don't disagree with you there, @Heggettypeg . The record of the Labour Party is poor, no doubt about that.

My first thought was as moto's. They do have an LGBT+ descriptor, though. It would have been interesting to see how the sexes skewed on some of the named issues. Even, perish the thought, some female-specific issues other than abortion.

It's a nice tool. Now it's working, they could add more categories. They're probably nervous about labelling their MPs male or female! Let's hope they'll get over that, eh.

IwantToRetire · 04/11/2025 00:44

I'm not quite sure that I am using it properly but for instance if you group by regions and then housing, its quite low in all regions and is some non existent. But regions by welfare is more wide spread.

Depressingly, the thought strikes that if asked to name a few high-profile female Labour MPs who were trans enthusasts, I could name a few, but if asked to do the same for terfy MPs, I'd be struggling. Only Tonia Antoniazzi springs to mind, and she's not really that high-profile. I'm sure there are some others.

I think that's a different point to the one I was making, but yes votes by sex of MP could be interesting.

I was more concerned that based on the list of "tribes" ie special interest groups advancing an agenda and giving a voice to that interest group women's interests aren't there at all. But LGBTI+ are.

It is supposed to 'shines a light on the vast number of clusters, groups and alliances within the Parliamentary Labour Party, allowing users to look at individual groupings, gauge their relative size – and explore how different tribes and factors overlap.'

I don't see how women in the Labour Party - who have a group called Labour Women - are not a grouping or a tribe. I see the Musicians' Union is, so it would be interesting to know how a 'grouping' was defined.

It is a big failure not to have Labour Women's Declaration on there they are a distinct group with a bunch of backing some public, more in private apparently with a significant political impact.

Their biggest supporter is the Home Secretary, but there are a bunch of other minsters who have openly supported them.

2025 Labour Women's Declaration supporters list

Shabana Mahmood MP, Birmingham Ladywood, Home Secretary, previously Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice
Dame Diana Johnson, MP Hull North & Cottingham, Minister of State at the Department for Work and Pensions
Jess Phillips MP for Birmingham Yardley, Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Home Office) - (Minister for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls).
Jo Stevens, MP Cardiff East, Welsh Secretary
Feryal Clark, MP, Enfield North.
Tonia Antoniazzi, MP Gower
Marsha de Cordova, MP Battersea

The following 6 new Labour MPs all had the support of Labour Women's Declaration. Tracey Gilbert has frequently spoken up.

Imogen Walker MP for Hamilton & Clyde Valley - She is currently an Assistant Whip
Joani Reid MP for East Kilbride & Strathaven
Kirsteen Sullivan MP for Bathgate & Linlithgow
Tracy Gilbert, MP Edinburgh North & Leith
Richard Baker, MP for Glenrothes and Mid Fife
Alison S Taylor, Paisley and Renfrewshire North MP

Obviously a key figure in Labour on these matters is Wes Streeting, Ilford North, Health Secretary.

He is a former TA, but it is pretty clear he is now mostly peaked.

Other Labour MPs that expressed pro woman views include:

Karin Smyth, Bristol South, Minister of State for Secondary Care
Jonathan Hinder, Pendle and Clitheroe, [prominent in Blue labour]
Mary Glindon, Newcastle upon Tyne East and Wallsend
Preet Kaur Gill, MP Birmingham, Edgbaston,
Sarah Jones, Croydon West
Jake Richards, Rother Valley
Graham Stringer, Blackley and Middleton South
David Smith, North Northumberland, UK's Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief

That's it exactly. An existing group.

Would they "justify" this exclusion because the "tribes" are MPs.

Are there and MPs who are actively, or publicly, member of LWD?

The top 13 MPs I listed have endorsed LWD in various ways from attending/speaking at events to advocating for them. i imagine they all signed the declaration.

LWD is at Labour conference it is part of the Labour movement.

So why dont they feature as a tribe?!!!

Typical erasure of women.
