Powell v Philipson

I can’t see an earlier thread on this and a wondering which of them is the best bet when it comes to defending women’s rights. I’m no fan of the Starmer government but Powell has said some things about the Supreme Court judgement not being fair while I note Philipson has kicked discussion about guidance down the road until after the election is out of the way. There are other things to consider but whether a politician will acknowledge and defend sex-based protections is the acid test for me.

Phillipson, I think.

When are the results due?

Powell is TWAW through and through, if she said the SC judgement wasn't fair, she meant it wasn't fair to TW.

I can't find the post now but, as I remember, Rosie Duffield tweeted a few weeks ago that Bridget Phillipson was the only candidate who supported the supreme court ruling.

SionnachRuadh · 09/10/2025 16:24

On the merits of the thing: Phillipson has accepted the SC ruling and shown some spine in doing so. So, on the merits, if I were a Labour member, I'd vote for her.

On the broader politics: Powell was one of the most tin-eared and gaffe-prone members of an extremely unpopular government, but Keir Starmer is so hated among Labour members that him sacking her from the cabinet, plus an endorsement from Andy Burnham, will propel her to victory and it probably won't be close.

I don't know what this says about the Labour membership but I'm not optimistic.

I received the ballot paper from my trade union today and just voted for Phillipson due to her support for the Supreme Court ruling. Apparently she used to run a women's refuge and understands the importance of single sex provisions.

I read a while ago that Powell was very much the favourite. Is this true? I hope not!

SionnachRuadh · 09/10/2025 17:12

Based on polling it looks like Powell is going to run away with it. Basically because she's a lightning rod for everyone who hates Starmer.

I wish it weren't so, and women could have a candidate who wasn't the genius who gave us the Ed Stone in 2015...

IwantToRetire · 09/10/2025 17:56

There's a lot of discussion about this on an other thread.

But cant for the life of me remember which one.

If someone else does, maybe post the link as it had quite a few opinions / thoughts.

Bannedontherun · 09/10/2025 18:41

I have voted Philips os Powell is a TRA

luckylavender · 09/10/2025 19:04

I will be voting for Phillipson. Powell seems so lightweight.

JennyForeigner · 09/10/2025 19:40

I'm voting for Phillipson. I can't bear Lucy Powell - the worst of the lecturing headgirl labour tendency. She's so obviously there to smooth the path for Burnham.

I also can't bear him. Vacuous, permatanned and slimy. He'd hand the country to reform.

Leafstamp · 09/10/2025 20:39

Of the two, Phillipson is the better bet for women’s rights.

ariel333 · 09/10/2025 21:55

Thanks all and thanks for the link to the other thread. Seems like Phillipson is the best bet.

Phillipson is better on this issue.

We talked about it in the Labour conference thread as well with other recent developments inside Labour ; https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5416076-5416076-sex-and-gender-at-the-labour-party-conference?page=2

DrBlackbird · 10/10/2025 08:50

I don't know what this says about the Labour membership but I'm not optimistic.

That they’re going the same way as the Green Party? Tory party faring no better with the ridiculous Farage-wannabe Jenrick. All these parties seem to be imploding with asinine leadership, constant ranting and no serious policy proposals. Handing political control to the bloody Reform. Depressing.

WhereAreWeNow · 10/10/2025 09:10

This has helped make up my mind. I was unsure who to vote for but I'm now going to vote Phillipson.
