Prime Minister refused to ban 1st cousin marriage

happydappy2 · 04/10/2025 10:10

Even though there is clear evidence of serious birth defects to babies born from 1st cousin marriages. It is deeply worrying that the bride and groom will have the same Grand Parents.....this is unsafe for women in a patriarchal family system.

Who takes on the bulk of the work caring for the disabled child-the woman...

Why is the British gov't promoting incest?

I hope this is not true...but does anyone know any more about it?

Basil the Great (@Basil_TGMD) on X

Keir Starmer blocked a ban on 'cousin marriage' That's right, the UK Government is actively promoting incest

Exactly.

I was quite shocked when I discovered, as this Private Members Bill was brought, the first cousin marriage wasn’t already banned.

It is frowned on in sane society for very obvious reasons.

Starmer’s reluctance to allow this through reflects how very beholden he is to the Muslim community. That is not healthy for our democracy.

MainframeMalfunction · 19/10/2025 11:56

Precisely: people’s personal beliefs should not prevent us from implementing evidence-based public policy and law. Allowing religious views to overrule scientific fact and be used as an excuse for knowingly, deliberately causing entirely predictable and unnecessary harm to children and wider society is the fast track back to the dark ages.

ForwardLook · 19/10/2025 14:33

There is a case in the news at the moment where a young muslim girl with devout parents has a rare degenerative disease. I can’t find it to link but I would put money on her parents being related. They already had an older child with the same conditon die young. Why would we want more children like this born when it could be prevented? I simply don’t understand it. It’s a side of said cultures that is and should be prevented.

Our Labour Government is being extraordinary short-sighted here. Labour IS currently the recipient of the majority of Muslim votes in England and Wales. But, increasingly we're seeing Muslim independent candidates competing and winning, in constituencies with a large Muslim population. Four such Independents were newly elected in the 2024 election:

  • Adnan Hussain, Blackburn
  • Ayoub Khan, Birmingham Perry Bar
  • Iqbal Mohamed, Dewsbury and Batley
  • Shockat Adam, Leicester South

Mohamed has already spoken out against banning Cousin Marriage in Parliament, saying we should encourage genetic testing and better education instead. Which we know has already been tried, and it has failed.

Banning 1st/2nd Cousin Marriage and requiring all religious marriages to be legal marriages is very clearly the right thing to do. It needs to be done urgently as it will become increasingly difficult with more independent MPs who will prioritise stopping these very necessary changes. Meanwhile, many more British children with very severe disabilities will be born, and many more British women will be bullied into marrying a close genetic relative.

There is a planned Government consultation next year to update Marriage Regulations. Proposals to ban cousin marriage and to ban non-legal religious marriages MUST be included in this Bill.

Excellent post. Those of us who care about this must lobby our MPs to show the strength of feeling about this and try to ensure that it is included in the bill.

The conservatives damaged the country for the benefit of their backers, but at least that was only giving away money.

labour are destroying the country for the benefit of the Muslim vote and the trade unions and the damage is going to be far, far harder to undo. It may be irreversible.

They really really are.

The conservatives were mostly about having affairs and helping their chums. Labour also seem to give cash to their chums so little difference there. Now they give away our power to some people with values incompatible with our own. Some of whom also want to kill us.

How is counter terrorism going to work effectively if we are not allowed to criticise the terrorists?

People like the Gaza Independents would be able to stand whoever the government was, since they're citizens. I agree that colluding with councillors & others who promote cousin marriage is very dangerous.

The ongoing problem is the large number of Muslims who are legal citizens here but haven"/ accepted British values. We need to focus on winning the younger generation before they are indoctrinated.

givenitupnow · 21/10/2025 13:47

The awful genetic conditions that are the result of generations of first cousin marriage cost the nhs a fortune. Also many of these conditions become apparant in childhood and get gradually worse during adolescence. Imagine watching your older brothers gradually losing their sight/ hearing/ mobility/ mental capacity and knowing you were following the same path.
Education is a long and often futile endeavor.
There needs to be legislation and it needs to be enforced.

deeahgwitch · 21/10/2025 17:47

First cousin marriage is allowed in Ireland too 🙄😮

The age of sexual consent in some countries is 14. Should we lower ours to match?

Something being legal elsewhere doesn't mean it should be here.

Or we need to - as a society - make it clear what our values are and that we will make life utterly miserable for anyone who does not share them.

Yes. This has been part of the problem. Even on here PPs claim that because ‘Britishness’ and ‘British values’ are tricky to define, they don’t really exist, we are just a large group of mixed migrants from centuries back and effectively there is nothing to defend.

Then the chilling effect created by people yelling ‘racist’ and the latest charming epithet ‘flag shaggers’ at anyone who dares even raise the topic of immigration has almost paralysed us all.

At least it feels like we’ve broken the dam a bit now.

No.

Explain how making cousin marriage illegal will make things “awful for entire populations”.

My friend from another culture where women have babies younger thinks UK women need to be helped to understand that having babies is younger is better for you. I tried to argue that it's got to be a personal choice, she raised the fact that increased age in mothers and fathers leads to higher rates of disabilities. No one wants kids to suffer, but how far should we go to "help people" if they can't seem to "help themselves"? What percentage of disabled children is acceptable? So we ban cousin marriages, children after the age of 35? What about parents who have conditions we wouldn't deem "desirable" to be passed on? Life is so complicated, I wish it were simpler

I think perhaps the "science" needs to go further maybe? If we had an agreed percentage for likelihood of disabilities, then it would be easier to ban anything where the likelihood was over the agreed amount. Things like racism wouldn't come into it then as it would be clear it was against the law. I think it should be completely based on science to avoid the solution being seen as targeting only one culture. If everything that could lead to a known risk of say greater than 10% chance of a disability, was banned then it would all be clearer. But that starts to sound like eugenics, so I don't actually have a solution. Education is always useful though, so people have the tools needed to hopefully make up their minds themselves?
