Secret filming exposes hidden culture of misogyny and racism inside Met Police

Serving Metropolitan Police officers called for immigrants to be shot, revelled in the use of force and were dismissive of rape claims in footage captured by a Panorama undercover reporter.

The evidence of misogyny and racism challenges the Met's promise to have tackled what it calls "toxic behaviours" after the murder of Sarah Everard by a serving police officer.

Panorama's secret filming shows officers making sexualised comments to colleagues and sharing racist views about immigrants and Muslims.

This evidence reveals that, far from being driven out of the Met, racist and misogynistic attitudes have been driven underground. "Someone new joins, boom, mask on. You've got to figure them out," one officer said.

After the BBC sent a detailed list of allegations to the Met, it suspended eight officers and one staff member, and took two more officers off front-line duties. Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said the behaviour outlined by Panorama was, "disgraceful, totally unacceptable and contrary to the values and standards" of the force.

I dont supposed anyone is surprised by this, but terrible that the Met has still not dealt with this.

It’s hardly ‘hidden culture’. None of this is news. We’ve had inquiry after inquiry, and report after report. Nothing ever actually comes of it. Nothing changes.

Wrenjay · 01/10/2025 18:50

It was always said when I was a teenager "don't trust the Met". Things haven't changed since the 1960s. I have never in trouble but wouldn't even ask them the time even now.

StellaAndCrow · 01/10/2025 18:53

It wasn't very secret! Misogyny must be the least surprising thing to find within the Met.

Linenpickle · 01/10/2025 18:57

Some of what is being reported and portrayed is very misleading. Some of it is bad.

Linenpickle · 01/10/2025 18:58

Some of the younger ones who are awful are a result of reduced and poorer training and lowering of standards. The government needs to address that element.

IwantToRetire · 01/10/2025 18:58

I think that point is that the Met claims they have dealth, are dealing with it. There have been a few high profile discharges.

But this shows that the culture hasn't changed.

So although I want watch, am glad the programme has got this back in the spot lights.

Sadly, I dont think this is unique to the BBC.

But there are not many other jobs where having those attitudes means you are totally unsuitable to be dealing with members of the public.

So the problem is so long as there are people in the UK growing up with these attitudes it is almost inevitable some will be in the police.

Or are people like this somehow attracted to being part of the police because of the power it gives them.

Yes, my great grandfather (born 1890s, died 1950s) always advised my gran not to!

Misleading how?

Linenpickle · 01/10/2025 19:01

there are some police who should be sacked. Just like there are nurses, doctors, and so forth. It is also very one sided and edited to suit the bbc and man hating presenters/interviewees.

FortheloveofPetethePlumber · 01/10/2025 19:03

It's rather like secret filming in a primary school dining room discovering that children like chips. Yes, everyone knows the met are fundamentally misogynist and racist, it's not a secret, it's openly enacted and tax payer funded.

The government should take a leaf out of the gender movement's book and follow their example on how to indoctrinate and fix policy. There needs to be groups like Sex Matters and FWS going in to do training, points systems and shiny badges and banners to earn, and a rigid and harsh discipline system for anyone daring to say anything off message. Parades with pretty glittery costumes. Colourful lanyards. Stonewall showed how to do it. It works. Go politically capture the police. And then do the NHS. And the Civil Service. And the HoC and HoL.

Foolsgold74 · 01/10/2025 19:04

Wherever you find men, you find misogyny.

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 01/10/2025 19:10

I've lived in London for 28 years. Most people I know don't trust the Met police. In my time in London we've had so many scandals, that when a new one breaks, the common refrain is, "Well what do you f*cking expect?"

Linenpickle · 01/10/2025 19:12

Look at what the police have to deal with. I wouldn’t/couldn’t do it.

InsectsMatter · 01/10/2025 19:13

This is strange as most of them seem to spend their time arresting British people for ‘hateful’ tweets.
They seem to give Muslims a free pass and lock up everybody else.

Skipthisbit · 01/10/2025 19:15

Looking forward to someone sending in an under cover reporter to the bbc to test the paragons of virtue that they are.

ffs ….there are tens of thousands of police men and women. The vast majority of them are decent hard working people doing a fucking impossible job. A percentage of them are nasty horrible arseholes. A small percentage of them will be criminals, paedophiles, drug addicts, misogynists etc. This is not a surprised.

Rather odd that in the article when the ‘reporter’ couldn’t get the evidence he wanted from one police man when he was on duty with that man,
he decided that he needed to befriend him and go to the pub and keep questioning and probing all after work hours in order to get anything incriminating.

Hypocrisy. They want to hide their own hatefulness.

"Man-hating" 🙄

I'd argue that the real man-hate is thinking so badly of men that you expect nothing better of them than misogyny and racism.

All the best beloved people in my life are male and I expect great things from them, because I know that's what they're capable of.

Ok, because, you know, one could not possibly be Muslim, and British. Thanks for enlightening me!

Or law-abiding!

As if the answer to the problem of the non-crime hate incidents, or lack of action over grooming gangs, is to start arresting people just for being Muslim. Christ alive.

KylieKangaroo · 01/10/2025 22:42

This might be a stupid question but how come they are allowed to show the faces of the policemen in question? I understand they have been dismissed and rightfully so ( don't trust the police or the BBC) but would not think they would be allowed to be shown like this

KylieKangaroo · 01/10/2025 22:56

Please ignore above post, have now read another thread about this and understand why it was important that they were shown.

Nobody is saying that. It is true that historically the grooming gang criminals were let off due to their race & religion, and the cover up continued until recently.

Also the anti semitism on many Palestine marches often seems ignored, though ofc many non Muslims on those are also guilty.
