This is at my son’s university - it’s a new fund - not sure where the funds are coming from but very disappointed in the University

University - “gender expression fund”

Excellent. I assume that means any and all students can get funding for makeup, sportswear, clothes etc. Or is it only for the special ones?

I don't know what that particular university is like but I know the one I work at has a huge demand on the student hardship fund and always runs out of money quite early in the year. Helping students who are struggling to eat/pay rent etc would be much better use of this type of funding.

Hahaha. Not sure if it's the same uni but I've seen it before: I know someone who got £50 for a "gender-affirming" haircut, with no questions asked. I'd encourage all hard-up students to absolutely take advantage 😂

lcakethereforeIam · 27/09/2025 16:09

They've got the agender flag! The students there should just use it for pocket money.

ParmaVioletTea · 27/09/2025 16:09

My university has one of these, but it's run by the student's union, not the university. So I don't think funds for teaching undergrads are diverted into this - and it's only around £50-60. Student unions & guilds fund all sorts of weird & whacky stuff. And I think the trans things is becoming less fashionable - well, I hope that's the case!

SexRealist · 27/09/2025 16:15

One of my DC is absolutely shameless. They would totally apply to such a fund (and have done similar but won'tgive exact details), claiming some to be gender fluid or NB. To be clear, they are completely gender critical - their attitude to such things is - well, if they make nonsense rules, what's to stop you joining in with the nonsense and benefiting, in the process devaluing the nonsense? I am equally parts admiring and horrified.

Watfordwoman · 27/09/2025 16:16

I think it only for the ‘special ones’ - when my son needs a haircut I’ll send him along to see if he can get a special one - think he needs some new knee pads too 🤔
bloody ridiculous
when I was at uni (too long ago) the hardship fund was a lifeline but you had to submit all sorts of financial info to access it ……

Fabulous. I lost my make up bag last week and it’s cost a fortune to replace. This would have been a great help, as without suitable slap I often forget entirely which gender I’m supposed to be.

FailingAtNothing · 27/09/2025 16:20

It's the student union doing this - student-led, not the university. They're usually a separate entity but funded by a block grant from the uni.
If you look there's probably all sorts of stuff you also disagree with but each to their own in my opinion!

Good point considering TRAs tell us that dying your hair or any type of cosmetic surgery is gender affirming.

But the whole point about self identifying is that it can change day to day, and cannot be gainsaid. So nothing to stop you (temporarily) being special, if you are sufficiently cynical.

My university was giving out £100 a time to those who claimed it for their gender expression. No questions asked. The fund was depleted very quickly.

If I was a student I'd be applying.
I need my gender affirmed with make up, sportswear, a swimsuit, maybe hair products and clothing.

Your child is brilliant 👏

Ridiculous, but I honestly think a lot of this will die out over the next few years. My DD is 14 and she and all her friends think the gender stuff is stupid

I really hope you're right. When my son was 14 he thought all the gender stuff was stupid too. Now he's 21 he wants to start opposite sex hormones. 😫😭

Igmum · 01/10/2025 18:01

So sorry to hear that @SummerSunAndFun - sending hugs 🫂. My daughter went through a phase of being trans when deeply depressed post COVID lockdowns. She’s out the other side now but I’m always terrified she will be drawn back into the cult.

I wonder if they were surprised by the uptake!
