Waterstones and JKR new book

An exciting day for fans of Strike & Robin!

Despite having a pre-ordered Kindle and Audible version auto sent to me today, I decided to pop into the large city centre Waterstones I was passing on my lunch break from work to see what they were doing for publication day of the Hall Marked Man.

There was nothing in the window, no posters, no signs, no copies displayed. So I popped inside.

There were tables out with "new fiction" hardbacks but it wasn't there, not on its own table like a few others, and not with others in a shared display. So I went to the "new fiction" section for the shelves and searched under G - nothing there either.

I wandered about a bit, assuming I'd made some sort of mistake, before asking a member of staff whether I had got the day wrong. I was assured they did have copies and they could get me one from behind the desk. I asked why they weren't out and was told that they were, so I explained that I couldn't see or find them, and the member of staff just sort of laughed in response.

It was seriously weird.

I have been left feeling really quite uneasy. Why does such a large bookseller want to make customers ask for a book? Seriously thought this shit was blowing over!

Has anyone had a better experience?

I’d be reporting it to head office. Waterstones is there to sell books, not to make customers feel uncomfortable. If the staff are not doing their job correctly, it should be sorted out. I don’t have much patience left for the self-indulgence of staff who put their pathetic politics before sales.

Do you have a bucket I could borrow?

I have no idea what your problem is but your posts are getting very boring. If you don't like the thread you do have the ability to hide it. Would you like instructions on how to do that?

I seriously hope that none of you have any gay or lesbian friends, family members or colleagues, as you pay for and enjoy work by “Robert Galbraith”. Don’t tell me an educated, intelligent woman with an editor, agent and publisher did not know what she was doing when she chase the name. It’s nonsense. It had to be an informed choice.

You're not still peddling this shite are you? It has been pointed out to you countless times that it's absolute crap.

It's like the mind numbing crap repeated ad infinitum about Marsha P Johnstone, debunked utterly by people who were actually there, but parroted like gospel by thick as pig shit TRA's.

Um the subject of all this is a book.
A nonfiction book.
A work of imagination and invention.

Can anyone recommend a mixed fight book ? Me and my daughter want to learn to box

It also reminds me of the idiots who keep saying that the mould in JKR’s house is muddling her brain after she posted a photo which showed some mottled pattern wallpaper in the background. They all know it’s not mould but keep going on about it. Lies are all they have.

StMarie4me · 03/09/2025 21:43

I mentioned neither trans rights nor mould. Just a name.

Your responses are so ridiculous it’s laughable.

Just off to name myself Peter Sutcliffe as a pseudonym. Bye!

But yet you keep responding……. I thought you’d have preferred Volkmar Sirtusch as a pseudonym? Would be more fitting.

When the last one came out I couldn't find it in a big bookshop in Scarborough, I think also Waterstones.

I'm all for supporting real bookshops over Amazon but half the books I want are too obscure to be in stock and then for some reason they don't have current bestsellers either!

They don't have bestsellers as they can't compete with supermarkets and Amazon (and Waterstones, the Works etc) selling them at huge discounts. No point ordering them when they know they won't sell.

My nearest Waterstones has a large section dedicated purely to Harry Potter.

WhereYouLeftIt · 04/09/2025 14:35

Walked past my local Waterstones, The Hallmarked Man was in a window display amongst other books 'for September', and a table full of copies sitting right next to the 'New Fiction' display shelves just inside the door.

They also had TWWWW displayed when it came out.

Leamington Spa - not every branch is staffed by the captured!

Surely you mean you’d use Peter William as your pseudonym in honour of Sutcliffe? No? Your theory about Robert Heath’s connection to JKR’s pseudonym is so dopey, you couldn’t even bring yourself to follow the pattern in jest.

I tried to reserve it online from our local library today but it was showing unavailable everywhere. I am thinking maybe it takes a few days to get on the system, otherwise I may have to visit my local Waterstones

If it's anything like my library people will have put their name down months ago as soon as it was announced, so the library might have copies (or be waiting for them to be delivered in the next day or so), but you'll be at the back of a looong waiting list.

I reserved it in advance a few months ago and am apparently number 48 and it will have gone up since then. They have ordered 12 copies but are rubbish at chasing people up if they keep books over their 3 weeks so doubt I'll get it until November or so at the earliest.

mum2jakie · 04/09/2025 21:44

I reserved my library copy in July and am number 14. Hope the first 13 are quick readers!! I'd happily buy my own copy but find hardback copies take up too much space. I'll buy a copy when it comes out in paperback.

I had a similar experience years ago with one of Peter Robinson's books. It was a stand-alone, not an Insp Banks one, but anything with Peter Robinson's name on it is enormously popular round here. The queue went into the dozens, just like yours, so I put it on my Kindle wishlist and waited for the price to come down. It was worth the wait.

I always find the mentality of people like this so laughable. Anyone who has heard JKR talk about gay people, or actually read the books written under this pseudonym, will know she's not homophobic.

They don't seem to realise how ridiculous they sound. They're like small children furiously insisting that Santa's real name is Saint Mick, actually, and he's called that because he makes fun of all the elves at the North Pole. At a certain point you just have to laugh, and hope they grow out of believing everything they hear on the playground.

Chersfrozenface · 06/09/2025 14:31

Tootled by a Waterstones in my city, which has a large student population.

Copies of latest R Galbraith book filling a table right in front of the double entrance doors.

Excellent.
