Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

If I could be arsed (which I can't) I'd have a look at how many questionable men CC has worked with and failed to pass comment on.

So sick of lazy journalism and the scolding of JKR

AnSolas · 26/08/2025 06:57

This imo is low level promo work by the studio.

Not a squeek about his current work?

Unless he was sacked or grey/blacklisted by (JKR) the Studio, its not in his best interest to be bad mouthing someome he would want to work with again.

Yeah the extended interview makes it clear he approves of the new TV series and thinks it will be great to include more scenes to adapt from the book. So he is still a huge HP fan and wants way more of it. So ANYTHING else he says has been taken in the context that he is fine with JKR making another 100 million or more from the TV series.

“The great thing about it is that with the first and second and third book, we wanted to do it all. We wanted to bring all of that onto the screen, and we didn’t have the opportunity,” he says.
Columbus references the character Peeves from the first Harry Potter novel that “never made it into the film — we just didn’t have time to develop the character,” plus a storyline where Harry and Hermione have to drink potions and worry they may be poisoned.
“We could never get that incredible scene into the film, and I’m sure it’ll be in the HBO series. So for me, it’s an opportunity to bring all those scenes to life,” he says.

With JKR so he said the blandest thing he could to avoid being blacklisted in Hollywood. He could mean it, or he could be just saying the expected thing. However note he didn't say anything back in 2020. So I think this there is a chance this is just performative. More to the point though this sad statement is being covered in a lot of articles they are not emphasising the key element from the interview which is not what he said about JKR's opinions. They just are latching on that for clickbait because they now it will enrage some and upset others. The key point is that Columbus wants a huge HP tv series which will make JKR become more successful and wealthy than ever because her books are great.

Also this is the director of Mrs Doubtfire regarded by some as "transphobic." A good interviewer would have confronted him with that.

Chris can be happy or sad all he likes

But does he have an actual argument?

TheKeatingFive · 26/08/2025 08:12

Aw diddums 🙄🙄🙄

hholiday · 26/08/2025 08:34

I find it sad that a man who made so many kids’ films has no problem with healthy children being the subject of disastrous medical experiments.

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 26/08/2025 08:50

Has he not had any work lately? Virtue signalling is always a good way to make people relevant again isn’t it?

WimbledonWhites · 26/08/2025 09:14

He directed the Thursday Murder Club film which is why he’s being interviewed.

DrBlackbird · 26/08/2025 09:25

Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Harry Potter films, has said he disagrees with JK Rowling’s views on transgender issues and called the situation “very sad”.

What is it with all the sadness? It is how naice people enact being TRA now? A change from those who shout abuse and throw their piss at least.

Chris Columbus produced a film recently that included Elliot Page and must know dozens of Hollywood types with ‘trans’ children so toes the line with being sad. Cowardly, unreflective and unthinking about how having men self identify as women is affecting the rest of the world outside of Hollywood.

His comments have been splashed across multiple media headlines so not particularly nice to the woman who helped make him a lot of money.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/08/2025 09:26

Sad times.

Datun · 26/08/2025 09:34

There's nothing more irritating than a man claiming women defending their rights makes him sad. Fuck off.

I want the response to these poor, sad men to be, well you might agree with housing violent rapists with incarcerated women, but I don't.

If they think being sad gets them a seat more or less on the fence, I'd like them to be kicked off it

Charabanc · 26/08/2025 13:17

Here's the actual piece in Variety, he spoke to them while publicising The Thursday Murder Club film, which he directed. Various news outlets have intepreted his words, or made headlines out of them.

The apt quote is: "I like to sometimes separate the artist from the art, I think that’s important to do,” he says. “It’s unfortunate, what’s happened. I certainly don’t agree with what she’s talking about. But it’s just sad, it’s very sad.”

So he 'certainly doesn't agree' with women's safeguarding and the setting of their own boundaries.

Great, thanks Chris 🙄

He's thisclose to saying #bekind.

I get the feeling he hasn't been following the issue at all, but has to say something.

Lottapianos · 26/08/2025 13:26

He doesn't agree with 'what she's talking about'? Im so sick of this mealy mouthed shit. She's talking about biology being real, male violence against women being real, and women being entitled to single sex spaces. I'm fed up of all the criticism of JKR based on 'bad vibes' and no understanding of what she has ACTUALLY said / written

IrnBruAndDietCoke · 26/08/2025 13:27

He only did the first two films so I don't feel like he's qualified to comment, just getting a headline out of an association with JKR that ended 23 years ago in 2002. Does anyone know why he didn't do the other 5 films? Was it his choice or the studio's? I must say I don't really like the 2 he did, they were a bit... Christmassy. Everything was so shiny and twinkly and that wasn't the impression I got from the books. I think the rest of the film series is much better. The last good CC film I saw was Home Alone 2, which at least was intentionally Christmassy.

Pleasantsort · 26/08/2025 13:33

Well exactly

How hard is it to read what she's actually written before making a public comment?

I seem to recall that the studio were happy with him, but he had found filming the first two films so all-consuming and pressurised that he wanted to do something else.

ThePoshUns · 26/08/2025 15:56

Oh boo hoo. Was he sad when he was picking up his millions of dollars pay cheques on the back of JKR’s work? I highly doubt it

He's in the Times plugging his latest film.

I'd have just scrolled on by, despite the click-baity headline except

It’s only recently that he’s begun to feel his sense of “ownership” over the Potterverse. “I look back and I realise that I cast the film, with my team. And we created the world, the look and the costumes,” he says.

The fucking nerve of the man!

Didn't he want American actors?

GrimDamnFanjo · 31/08/2025 01:53

Laughed while reading that he wanted to film the Cursed Child with the original actors.
hope JKR does do that without him as director and with only Tom Felton in the cast.

hholiday · 06/09/2025 08:04

And sadly Chris himself has seemingly managed to take a modern British crime series filled with nuanced characters and make it a bit racist. Now that is sad: archive.is/BP5n7
