Question: if a male-to-female trans inherits a dukedom, would he be known as the "duchess of.... " or the duke of... "?

{tried to edit the subject line typo but it won't let me!}

It's only the title of Duke that gets inherited so I assume he would be a Duke.

SecretNameforMN · 10/08/2025 16:07

But surely he would not want to be called a duke as that would be misgendering him, which is harassment, which is illegal. Every time someone called him duke, every letter that arrived, would be a hostile act which was denying his existence.

He could disclaim his title

He could disclaim his title

Why would he do that when the lolly is so large? And he’s the most special type of Laydee of them all. Overcoming all obstacles to become a ladyduke

If the man has fathered a son the son will inherit the title on his death, so if the man who is identifying as a 'women' is also claiming to be said son's 'mother', perhaps the title could be pushed onto the next generation, the son would be then be the Duke and as his son's 'mother' he could be the Dowager Duchess.
Aristo's are all nuts anyway. 😂

I imagine they’d go for a polite mangling that doesn’t technically infringe the most important aspects of protocol but bends it a bit, so something like ‘Lady Choosename the Duke of Titlename’ and then everyone would be expected to just use Lady Choosename day to day.

TheUnusuallyQuerulentMxLauraBrown · 10/08/2025 16:45

eg ‘Lady’ Matilda Simon is 3rd Baron of Wythenshawe

It's all so laughable and just shows what a piss take the rules around transgenderism are in the UK. The only exception where it's just fine to missgender and answer to a male title. In all other cases the TIM would have to go and have a lie down if he was mistakenly called a he or a Mr. Duke is absolutely fine though. Hypocrisy or what!

HereForTheFreeLunch · 10/08/2025 22:17

Exactly. Female sport women losing their titles is fine, women abused is fine but god forbid Mr Duke should lose his money or his sister could stake a claim.

From the Wikipedia page:
**
…we now find ourselves in the absurd position of a younger son inheriting a title but identifying as a woman to stand in the hereditary peers by-elections, so keeping her new identity of a woman and the rights of a man to inherit." Carew Pole went on to question challenge the validity of Lady Simon's title, as she is not the eldest child of the 2nd Baron Simon of Wythenshawe and therefore, as she is also a woman, the title should go to her elder sister, The Hon. Margaret Simon. However, Margaret Simon could not have succeeded to the barony even if Matilda had been born female, as the barony can only be inherited by "heirs male of the body"; it would have passed to a male-line cousin of Margaret and Matilda instead.

From that example my take is that regardless, women are second class citizens, with a good chance of always being so. Men just do like giving up their privilege.

TheUnusuallyQuerulentMxLauraBrown · 11/08/2025 00:22

Yep, men will twist the rules in any direction that allows them to hold onto that sweet, sweet male privilege!

Igmum · 16/08/2025 19:06

Tbf they wouldn’t call him a Duke when speaking to him, they would say Your Grace, with the same terms used for Duchesses. Obviously when speaking about them it would be Duke of.

I have clearly read too many Georgette Heyers 😀.

Just goes to show what the GRA was really about: giving men what they want.
