Why post something and expect people to click on it without saying what it is or putting forward your thoughts on it?

Coffeeishot · 31/07/2025 14:25

What is it about ? I mean the original writers/producers/studios of pretty woman tried to put it out as a fairy tale so it is nothing new.

Bumblebee72 · 31/07/2025 14:36

Disney films are full of themes of child killing, drugging, bestiality, capital punishment, lack of consent etc. I'm not sure prostitution is the worst of it.

TheCatsTongue · 31/07/2025 15:07

Eh? Disney buy 20th Century Fox including their entire back catalogue, this now means people can moan about a 30 year old film and claim Disney endorse it.

Click-baiting at its finest.

Ah is that what it is ? Meh it isn't something i can get upset about, Disney show much worse on their streaming service and they are not claiming it is for children or "a fairytale "

Bunshaped · 31/07/2025 15:33

A quick AS shows that all this poster does is start threads with a link to a video, no comments or opinions or interaction.

It's a lazy way to gather "input" from others.

DiscoBob · 31/07/2025 15:34

Disney didn't make the film. Nor are all Disney owned shows and films meant to be children's fairytales. It's a massive media conglomerate that owns thousands of shows on various themes.

Actually you're wrong about that. Disney and their executives were very involved in the creation of the movie. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Woman

Disney was indeed involved in the development of the movie. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Woman

But it is a "fairy tale", isn't it? Woman is a sex worker, gets taken on by very rich man/Prince, they go through trials and tribulations, then he falls for her and saves her.

In what way is that not a fairy story?

LuckyNumberFive · 31/07/2025 17:12

Nobody gives a shit. Hope that helps.

Btw, is that your own YouTube channel you're trying to plug?

3bluellamas · 31/07/2025 17:14

You can't slag off Pretty Woman to middle aged women. You'll be slagging off Ghost, Four Weddings and Notting Hill next.

We won't stand for it.

Ok thank you. But so what? As I said, not all Disney stuff is meant to be kids fairy stories.
It's a rom com aimed at adults.

Yes, I assume it is. Just basic advertising for her YouTube channel.

ArabellaScott · 31/07/2025 17:40

Thanks, OP. I'm not sure why you're getting such a hard time. Maybe because people generally give a bit of an intro when posting a link.

Anyway, your youtube looks interesting, with plenty that's relevant to a feminist board.

PollyNomial · 31/07/2025 18:02

This film has nothing on the story which many religious people present as a morally good and uplifting tale that is founded on genocide, ecocide and incest. It’s usually branded as Noah’s Ark.

But yes, PW is decidedly icky, at best. Still love the “big mistake” scene though!

cofffeeee · 31/07/2025 18:03

Fgs its a film its not real you can watch it or you dont simple really.

Discussing, analysing and critically assessing the messaging of films, media, societal narratives, and the entertainment industry is an actual thing.

You can discuss it as much as you want but its still a film its made up.
I cant stand dirty dancing because the main lead is a pervert imo so i dont watch it.
But its just a film people acting reading a script.

user3827 · 31/07/2025 21:18

Er, you’re noticing this now…? People still like the movie though 🤷‍♀️ what do you want, to ban it or something?

ooooohlala · 31/07/2025 21:59

Cinderella is a fairytale about child abuse.

Sleeping Beauty is a fairytale about poisoning then sexual assault.

Rapunzel is a fairytale about kidnap.

The point is overcoming the dark stuff.

I've never understood why people think fairy tales are supposed to be all lighthearted and wholesome.

You'd think the red hot iron shoes, cutting off feet, ripping out of hearts or stabbing them with ice, wolves eating small children, child abandonment, freezing to death, and people drowning in molten gold would give some clue.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 01/08/2025 08:57

Beauty & the Beast is another cheery Disney film about prostitution, so it's not as if they don't have form for it.

SnoopyPajamas · 01/08/2025 11:13

OP, this isn't the kind of board where you can just drop a link to something without context or opinion, and come back a few hours later to read the discussion about it. I'm guessing you've come from somewhere like Reddit or Ovarit, where that's more the norm? It isn't here. Here, people are suspicious of "ploppers'", and will assume you're trolling or mining for a Daily Mail article. If you want to share something interesting you've found online, you need to prove you're a human being, and get the ball rolling yourself on a conversation.

YouTube content also just doesn't get much traction on here, for whatever reason. There are some great feminist interviews, podcasts, and video essays out there, but it's hard to get a conversation going on long form content around here. Most of the people commenting on the video you posted are jumping to conclusions about it based on the title alone. That's not uncommon.

For what it's worth, I have watched the video in question. I think it's a great deconstruction of the "fairytale" at the heart of Pretty Woman - the idea that a man can buy a woman for a sex, only to fall in love with her, reform his character, and whisk her away to a life of luxury. It's a great video. But I wouldn't have watched it if your post was the way it entered my orbit. I clicked on YouTube because I know this creator from past videos. There's nothing to get me interested, the way you presented it here. And nothing to generate discussion.

I'm sure you mean well. But every forum has its culture, and sometimes it's better to read the room before you dive in. We don't just want "content" around here. We want to know who you are, and what you think about it.
