A small change by my local surgery - firmly asking for sex at birth

On one level I wish they wouldn't keep doing it but my local surgery had developed a new online form.

And these it was after name and age, they firmly ask for your sex (at birth) and explain as medical practioners they need this information not someone's gender identity.

I forgot to screen shot it, and am not saying this is the exact working but I was just amazed.

Not just that they are asking for it, but making the point that in terms of providing medical services this information is central!

I am hoping this is being used across the NHS.

Has anyone else seen or had to use anything making this bold statement about biological reality?

I imagine it's because patients have been providing incorrect biological information based on their own fantasies rather than actual facts.

I recently had to do some urine samples for my GP and the stickers they printed off said Gender: F but the form with all the details of what needed to be tested said Sex: F.
I crossed out Gender and wrote Sex and my sample mysteriously got lost. Did the same second time around and there were no problems. Was it coincidence that there was a rainbow lanyard wearer on reception when I dropped everything off?

I'm sure the post making a cringey joke about "pronouns" will be deleted, but I was amused to see they were so desperate to make up something to mock that they were the only person in the thread to even mention pronouns Grin

OP was the recent gender question in addition to asking bio sex, or instead of?

ApplebyArrows · 26/03/2026 08:35

"Sex at birth" would still be a ludicrous category in any sane society. I would be strongly tempted to write "same as now". As it is for everyone!

you are such a victim omg

poor baby im so sorry you had to deal with pronouns and identity. that must be sooo hard for you. such a delicate person, idk how you could survive that

It requires quite remarkable stupidity not to realise that sex, not gender, is what matters in medicine.

It is essential to know a patient’s sex to be able to treat them safely. Or have we all forgotten the transman whose baby died because no one thought of pregnancy?

Thanks for bothering to reply to someone who clearly isn't in touch with reality.

But also explains that when the unicorns are tasked with data collection they always FU!

Or rather try to ensure that accurate facts aren't recorded.

Identity is irrelevant where health and medicine are concerned. What matters is sex, as the International Olympic Committee has today confirmed in restricting female sport to those born female.

The addition of “At birth” is indeed ludicrous and one day, it will be dropped. I guess it’s a stepping stone though from “assigned at birth” so can only be a good thing as the word assigned is an active lie, whereas “at birth” is merely redundant.

Intersex is a genuine condition. Different to trans.

It is, but people with DSDs are still one sex or the other and a sex would have been recorded at birth.

Or the transwoman with bone pain due to metastatic prostate cancer because you wouldn't do a PSA in a woman.

At least she is not claiming her experience is 'literal genocide'.... Talk about victims!

My GP surgery has a screen you have to press when you arrive for an appointment. You can press either male or female. The forms for joining the surgery give you 2 options - male and female. There's no mention of transgender, but there are a lot of options for race and ethnicity. As far as I know the practice have stuck with reality throughout the trans craze, and they're in Scotland, so they earn extra brownie points.

CelticSilver · 30/03/2026 11:42

'At birth'. As if it later changes 🙄

IwantToRetire · 30/03/2026 18:24

Just a reminder, or to make clear, I posted about the new form because there are often threads on FWR about maybe we are making progress against everything being transed. And here was an example of within the past 2 years of a part of the NHS being transed.

This story is often quoted in GC circles but - in common with a lot of other information commonly shared in GC spaces - it has been misrepresented and the reality is more complex.

The patient’s medical records did state “M” however the patient told medical staff on arrival at the hospital that he was transgender, and that he had taken a home pregnancy test which was positive. He was also given another pregnancy test at the hospital. There was never any point where his care team thought he was a cis man.

However, because the patient was obese, his abdominal pain was assumed to be related to this rather than to his pregnancy. This lead to a delay in recognising the baby was in distress and resulted in the baby dying.

To be honest, the story says a great deal more about how medical professionals treat fat people rather than trans people.

Pregnant transgender man's baby died when nurse didn't realize he was in labor

A pregnant transgender man delivered a stillborn baby, although medical experts claim it may have been better handled if hospital staff would have recognized his pregnancy upon his arrival to the hospital.

Was the new form asking for gender in addition to sex, or instead of?

Instead of!

But luckily I could complete the rest of the form without filling in that bit.

Yeah, I agree with this. In the current/recent context of trans madness the OP's GP surgery using this wording is a victory, I don't deny that, but ideally 'at birth' wouldn't be used, as it's redundant.
