Govt forces Sport NZ to ditch transgender guidelines

Well this was a nice headline to wake up to. It doesn't actually say that men shouldn't play in women's competitions, but you would hope that the removal of inclusion by gender identity would enable sanity to return to individual codes. Netball NZ have been revising their guidelines for a long time now, so hopefully this gives them the kick up the bum required to sort themselves out. There are definitely men playing in the women's high level club competition as we have personally experienced.

Cricket currently allows trans women to play in female community competitions.

That sounds like good news for New Zealand women.

The article was pay gated and couldn’t find an archived copy, but gist seemed to be that government are threatening to withdraw funding if they don’t protect women’s sports?

That's weird, it doesn't say it's a paid article. Hopefully this archive link works (I haven't done this before) https://archive.ph/oBe7u. Basically the government have ordered Sport NZ to scrap their transgender guildines:
Its overarching principle said “transgender people can take part in sports in the gender they identify with”.
They are leaving decisions with individual codes, which does mean there's still some way to go, but the government has threatened to remove funding so hopefully they will see the error of their ways.

This is a brilliant bit of progress for NZ. Our elites are still pretty connected to the UK in many ways. The apron strings are still pretty firmly in their grasp. So I have been hopeful that they have been taking their noses out of the public money bucket for long enough intervals to get a whiff of the winds of change from Terf Island. It seems that is the case. They will never have the guts to actually firmly make any decisions to protect women and girls but by at least taking this fascist rubbish out of national guidelines will give some of the littler people who do most of the grunt work for actual sports a chance to do the right thing. How many will depends on how captured each sport is. Newer sports like Roller Derby and pickle ball don’t stand a chance. Netball is full of slightly inadequate and pervy seeming men but also has quite a few quite matronly women so that one will be an intriguing one to watch. Concussion research will hopefully scare the bejesus out of the rugby officials and their insurers. Athletics is pretty old school so will hopefully have some sensible, courageous people running it. Women’s football - anyone’s guess how that will go as it’s full of men at club level in Australia so it will depend how strong those apron strings are to mummy UK. Swimming and cycling, I have high hopes for them as the difference is so clearly obvious, not least when the bulges start popping out of the Lycra. But the determination of men to take prize money from teenage girls in lower level competitions has been pretty persistent. It will be interesting to see how it all goes. For now, let’s crack out those cigars my kiwi sisters!

Listening to some bloke on RNZ (radio NZ - similar but vastly inferior to R4) this morning wailing about how trans people are under represented in sports and this would do further harm. The presenter didn't challenge this, nor was there any discussion about how to encourage trans athletes (males) to feel confident to play sports with other males. Usual one sided "oh the poors trans" narrative. No wonder people are so dismissive of mainstream media.

Yeah transgender people should definitely be encouraged to play sport, just not men in women's sport. Even netball, that predominantly female of sports, has men's teams - go play there!

Yes, I've noticed a few things slipping in recently - eg the Department of Health being told to return to using women, mothers etc when referring to .. women and mothers. Maybe we'll get back to reason by stealth, which is how I think the nonsense came in in the first place.
I think (hope) a lot of sports introduced these gender rules because of Sport NZ guidelines, so they felt that they had to. And now they can reassess. Netball is the main sport we have been involved with, and we have personally encountered two TW in different women's teams my daughter has played against. It changes the whole game. And I agree, they would fit in very well in men's netball, there are some very odd characters.
