Hundreds take to the streets for first Dublin Dyke March in over 25 years

On Friday, June 27, almost 1000 people took to the streets of the Irish capital to attend the first Dublin Dyke March in over 25 years. With the theme of the event being “Space”, participants marched to demand visibility and protest for a number of pressing issues, including the housing crisis, the anti-trans climate and the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

The march culminated at Bernardo Square, where speakers from Dublin Lesbian Line, LINQ Ireland, Trans and Intersex Pride Dublin and Queers for Palestine Ireland addressed the crowd, highlighting several pressing issues in Ireland and beyond.

In addition to demanding increased visibility for the lesbian community in Ireland, speakers called on the government to take action on the country’s current housing crisis, which leaves many LGBTQ+ people vulnerable. Moreover, they pushed back against the hateful anti-trans rhetoric circulating around the world, with the US and UK being a particular influence.

When it comes to transactivism, I suspect Ireland will be the Japanese soldier of nations. Maybe alongside Canada.

IwantToRetire · 28/06/2025 19:37

I got quite excited when I saw the title of the article.

And thought, about time, a march celebrating the right of women to be same sex attracted.

But apparently that aspect of being a lesbian isn't even important enough to be mentioned when all these other issues need to be seen to be publicly supported.

Women, and that mean lesbians, need to know their place in the pecking order.

And that's last.

The title looked good, but the participants, the flags, the words, the priorities, the context, the banners saying “Dykes for trans rights” and “Free Palestine”...

How depressingly predictable. I thought initially, great! A lesbian march!

But no. Of course not. They've been hijacked, and march alongside their captors.

nauticant · 28/06/2025 21:20

It wouldn't be a march to promote transbianism without it providing a platform for men to abuse women on social media:

TheOtherRaven · 28/06/2025 21:23

How very bloody depressing.

JanesLittleGirl · 28/06/2025 22:21

Oh dear, how sad, how FUCKING predictable.

My heart reaches out to Irish lesbians. You are not well served.

Abhannmor · 28/06/2025 23:25

What a sad picture there. Palestine flags . Trans flags. Not a single gay pride flag or labyris. Lemmings marching to the Cliff edge...

This is awesome, thank you OP x

Don't feed the troll this time.

I mean I know this is mumsnet S&G, but the lesbian flag is the biggest flag in the picture..what the hell is wrong with you?

Are you referring to me?

BiologicalRobot · 29/06/2025 00:32

I'm confused. Was this a march to protest about (reduced) lesbians rights in Ireland or a lesbians march to protest other things, like war?

Hard to say isn't it. It's like they've been allowed to use the word Dyke as long as they play nice and carry trans signs. @SionnachRuadh is right - Ireland and Canada are bringing up the rear. Give it ten years before we get the anguished think pieces in the Irish Times. How could this happen in a modern democracy? Heads must roll.

Tragically, we can't blame the British this time. Or can we? The Tavistock Clinic is there. The Vatican maybe. Albino monks ; sure you wouldn't know what those lads get up to.

myplace · 29/06/2025 07:32

Aren't they all young. I miss Greenham Common. I wasn’t there, too young, and possibly wouldn’t have agreed- it was over long before I got political awareness.

But I’m sure I remember it being women of all ages.

yetanotherusernameAgain · 29/06/2025 07:56

Bee is right, the pink/orange striped flag is a lesbian flag:

EmpressaurusKitty · 29/06/2025 08:25

So Bee’s now taken over from Butterfly? I wonder what insect will be next on the rota.
Another Beetle?

As for that flag, I’ll take a labrys over it any day.

Fair enough. I always remember the Labyris tbh. It's not there and neither is the pride flag as far as I can see. Yes they are all quite young. Maybe they see themselves as sort of trans in waiting or embryo trans? I'm guessing the older lesbians have got the L out , having a crafty pint somewhere with their friends and lovers

SionnachRuadh · 29/06/2025 08:42

TBH I see it as basically an Omnicause march with lesbian branding. Everything in Ireland is Omnicause these days, unless it's something low status like working class people giving off about immigration.

The Omnicause is high status, and so are its associated mantras like "TWAW" and "from the river to the sea", which is why it can be hard to tell the difference these days between Fine Gael politicians and a posh fake revolutionary like Richard Boyd Barrett.

Irish society loves to think it's rebellious, but it's very very conformist. Once people stopped pretending to be conservative Catholics, they needed something to fill the vacuum.

NumberTheory · 29/06/2025 08:55

So when it was just female lesbians who were feeling oppressed, no need. But now men who identify as lesbians are feeling oppressed it’s time for a Dick Van Dyke march?

A workmate of mine was the first female HGV driver to work for a local authority. A lesbian too. I suppose she was a van dyke. I'll just get me coat...

Goldenpatchwork · 29/06/2025 12:34

So, explain as if I’m 4 years old. So a lesbian is a person who has a relationship with another person who presents as feminine. The genitalia is of no consequence?

Or is it as basic as the nature of the sexual act a person is attracted to. Penis penetration or hand/tongue stimulation.

I have no handle on this at all now.

Jigaliga · 29/06/2025 12:37

I wonder whether Irelands ultra-late acceptance of gay marriage has paved the way for the intense TRA support there. Kind of like a "see?! DEFINITELY not bigoted here!!!!" situation

Igmum · 29/06/2025 12:49

Or they are still trying to trans away the gay @Jigaliga

I too got excited at the headline and had visions of fine Irish dykes spurred on by the SC victory over here. Ah well. Maybe next year.

Goldenpatchwork · 29/06/2025 12:54

@Jigaliga The second wave of gay activists who were on the wrong side first time round aka Helen Joyce in this interview, about 20 mins in, being vociferous supporters of trans women who wish to undermine women’s need for specific spaces that represent a place of safety to the woman.
