New Legislation?

PMQs today, the recording starts with a number of questions about trans rights. Then there is Q& A that seems to indicate the government bringing in new legislation relating to the supreme Court ruling? I think the time stamp is around - 28.20. The session is still live ongoing.

It appears to have been listed as conversion therapy but a female LibDem (?) was asking for assurance that the EA could be revisited by government in light of SC ruling. Sigh. Do we all need to write to our MPs to say if we are relieved about the SC ruling and want government to work within the law - as clearly stated. There is no need for new law. (What would that law say? That TWAW?)

Is this a ploy to try to remove 'sex' as a protected characteristic?

Its looks that way. Personally, I think this tactic could eventually backfire due to compassion fatigue, or people moving on to the next cause.

TheOtherRaven · 18/06/2025 17:06

So they want to destroy protections and rights in law for women, for homosexuals and for women with trans identities, so that a small bunch of men can order women to take their clothes off and shut up?

Oh just TRY selling me that one on the bloody doorstep. Take it away Mr Farage.

OuterSpaceCadet · 18/06/2025 17:54

Surely they can't remove sex as a protected characteristic? That would be naked misogyny, nothing to hide it behind. Definitely a vote loser.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 18/06/2025 18:04

This won't happen. Labour are not going to hand over the next election to Farage because a group of emotionally incontinent men can't contain their fury at being denied access to the undressed bodies of women and girls.

There'll be lots more wailing and emoting I'm sure but society is facing more more critical issues than kowtowing to the needs of fetish addled men.

CassOle · 18/06/2025 18:07

I also don't think that it would be successful. The true believers (IIRC the Good Law Project have alredy mentioned this) would like to do it though. Don't trust them a micron.

Not to mention I think the ECHR would probably be more interested in this than they will be in special male supremacism.

Igmum · 22/06/2025 17:52

I can’t imagine any non Lib-Dem sane MP or Minister willing to touch this with a 10 foot barge pole. She might be lunatic, homophobic and misogynistic enough to want that to happen but it doesn’t mean it’s going to.

Hasn't exactly that already happened in Rep of Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada?

The fight to defend equity and safeguarding is not over.
