Gallup Poll: Two thirds of Americans prefer birth sex to gender ID in government IDs and sports

Some fascinating stats in the latest Gallup poll, which has been tracking Americans' attitudes to LGB issues for decades, and has included the T in recent years.

Key takeaways for me:

  • While Republican voters are almost unanimously behind Trump admin policies prioritising biological sex over gender identity, Democrats are relatively evenly split and independent voters are somewhat closer to Republicans. The even split with Democrats is significant given the intense pressure to disagree with literally everything Trump does.
  • Support for trans activist positions around sports and government IDs has declined by about 10 points across the board since 2021. This is the opposite direction of travel from LGB acceptance. The Gallup commentary valiantly argues that this may be because Americans are less likely to know trans people than LGB people. I'd argue (see also the Murray Blackburn Mackenzie surveys in Scotland) that the more people see of trans activism, the less they like it.

Most Americans think the birth sex of transgender people should be prioritized over gender identity when it comes to sports and official documents.

This would suggest as in this country people don't equate tolerance and acceptance of personal choice with unconditional indulgence of things that are wrong and unworkable for all.

Americans’ views of gay or lesbian relations and same-sex marriage have evolved over time to a point of broad acceptance in the U.S., but the public’s views of transgender people have not become more accepting in the past few years as transgender issues have received greater media and public policy attention.

I think this shows how important LGB✂T is.
There's been a lot in the media here in Ireland claiming that things have got worse/homophobia has increased in the 10 years since the 62% majority in the marriage equality referendum.

My opinion is that what happened was not a change of heart about acceptance of lesbian and gay people, it was the T getting bolted on to LGBT, and the deluge of genderwoo, and unquestioning pro-trans reporting in the media.

So if people object to drag story time for kids, or gender-neutral toilets only in schools, or the word 'women' being removed from just about everywhere, they must be anti-LGBTQ and 'therefore' Ireland has got more homophobic since 2015.

The Gallup Poll in the US seems to back up this interpretation of what happened to public opinion in Ireland.

I wonder what results they'd get if anyone drew a distinction between normie lesbian and gay people and the more, let's say alternative gay people who are aligned with the TQ+.
