It's not the award show itself so much as this article in the Independent

Looks like a bloke to me.

The need for awards to ditch male and female categories has never been starker

Non-binary star Cole Escola won the award for best leading actor in a play at last weekend’s Tony Awards. It’s a worthy and commendable win – but one that only intensifies long-standing questions about the relevance of gendered awards in our modern age...

The problem with ditching male and female categories is that the men will mostly always beat the women. See the Brits where they had to increase the number of nominations because women weren't even nominated.

I felt sad seeing the negative coverage on Twitter around Cole's win. He took "best leading actor" therefore he's not stealing a prize from an actress..but I think a lot of people just saw man-in-a-dress and didn't read further.

I only very recently discovered Cole Escola and have been hoovering up his stuff on YouTube. He's talented and hilarious and not pretending to be a woman (though he impersonates them in his work).

As a gender criticical feminist I want to support men who are gender non conforming but who don't claim to be literal females.

I agree what the article suggests is ridiculous. The writer has his own agenda that has nothing to do with Cole's win.

(PS these comments aren't aimed at you OP, rather reflecting the knee jerk reaction on Twitter.)

I think many people feel that gender non conformity is fine and can show confidence in going against the grain. That’s what is progressive. Suggesting that this makes you a different gender is actually quite regressive.

Sure - but he accepted an award in the male category and doesn't seem to be fanatical about it. Unlike the author of the article, who co-opted his win for other ends.

The Indy still doubling down on trying to be one of the cool kids. Looking more and more ridiculous.
