Munroe Bergdorf in the Observer

I was intending to read this article, in the spirit of keeping an open and non-judgemental mind, but couldn’t get past the line ‘On 16 April the UK Supreme Court ruled that the legal definition of “sex” is based on biological sex assigned at birth’.

Fuck’s sake. Can they genuinely not help themselves, or are they deliberately trolling people?

He’s been very active over the years. He worked with other vicious activists to cause the wonderful Baroness Nicholson (women’s rights campaigner both for UK women and Yezidi women) to be sacked, vilified and ostracised from her Vice President role of the Booker prize (established by her late husband).

He made a speech criticising women for talking about issues related to our bodies and had a group of lesbians banned from a Pride parade.

He was sacked by the NSPCC for breached safeguarding rules - inviting children to contact him privately and posing for sexualised pictures but such was a the power of the trans lobby, the BBC and others intervened on his behalf and the NSPCC ended up apologising.

There also other issues.

Apologies for being a bit flippant - he sounds like a piece of work.

I will have to do a bit of reading

Given what you have said, why would the Observer choose to celebrate him?

Waitwhat23 · 08/06/2025 21:05

Did have to (wryly) laugh at the vagueness of this sentence in that article -

'In February 2018, Bergdorf resigned as an LGBT adviser to the Labour party over some resurfaced tweets from 2010 that some found offensive.'

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/5717376/labour-lgbt-munroe-bergdorf-homophobic-tweets-apology/

The tweets which 'some found offensive' were wildly homophobic.

Those and other comments Bergdorf has made are in this image

Well, here's a little taster of what MB is like.

January saw the second annual Women’s March in major cities in the US and UK. Rightfully charged up in the wake of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, hundreds of thousands of women took to the streets to show a united front against abuse and harassment. But in among the banners, a well-intentioned yet misguided symbol of women’s equality was worn by protestors – the pink pussy hat. It might seem like a fun, inoffensive and light-hearted accessory, designed to unite women, but it feeds into a narrative that continues to push us apart. Last month, prior to the march I tweeted a reminder to those participating that it was an event for all women. I said, for the day to be truly progressive, it should focus on elevating the voices and experiences of those who are most often silenced and ignored in society. Guess who that means! Hmm

graziadaily.co.uk/life/opinion/munroe-bergdorf-women-getting-feminism-wrong/

cor blimey I’d forgotten about that article. He made a tweet demanding that women do feminism his way and they ignored him

Ultimately, this demonstrated to me a lack of interest about what we as trans people go through emotionally

Sad Sad

he really is a massive, narcissistic wally isn’t he?

Yes, you can take DNA from the foetus. It is in the mother's blood. The test is called NIPT.

Indeed. It amazes me that some people get through life without knowing such basic facts.

Are these people suddenly unaware of the 12 week scan done by the NHS where the sex of the baby is observed? Or how IVF sex selection of embryos works? Or missed the conversation with a pregnant friend where she divulged the sex of her baby?

It’s quite astounding.

I think many trans people (not all, obviously) don't have children, don't want them and have very little interest in children, babies or pregnancy; they are too wrapped up in trying to sort out their own lives.

No apologies needed - I just wanted to give some background.

Obviously where the Observer is concerned, the power of the trans still overrides normal social standards of behaviour. Imagine celebrating and platforming a person with his shady past.

This gives a bit more detail.

We did IVF to have our last baby. Because we were in our 40s we also did PGD, to test for chromosomal abnormalities. At this time, the sex of the potential baby was determined, from a 3 day blastocyst. When I got pregnant after transfer, I already knew I was having a girl.

CassOle · 08/06/2025 21:43

All the plastic surgery.
All the mansplaning what it is to be woman.
All the controversies.
All the naked photos with meat and two veg on display.

Yet this bloke was made UN Women's UK Champion.

Arseholes.

These people are very probably totally unaware of such things as they don’t directly concern them and are not in any way useful to them, as well as having a pretty poor grasp of biology and, indeed, reality.

Too wrapped up in themselves and their me, me, me attitude more like.

Oh, dear god, if I wore a ‘fluffy cardigan’ by Stella McCartney I would one able to fit through the doors on the bus.

How very far these people are from real life.

There seems to be quite a lot of digital post doing the heavy lifting in the images accompanying the article

Good to see that the Observer managed to mention all of Munroe's books, the film, the film release date, the book price et al

PermanentTemporary · 08/06/2025 22:32

@Catiette bit of an odd comment - given that by all accounts Imane Khelif really was one of the very few people to have sex assigned at birth incorrectly, given the DSD that they allegedly have. They would however have been obviously male at puberty.

Appropriating this very rare and complex experience to benefit people like Bergdorf who had a bogstandard male sex and developed on a normal pathway is one of the more upsetting things about this movement.

@LittleBitofBread which part of the observers description of the law lords decision do you disagree with?

sex cannot be assigned before birth can it? Can we assign any characteristics to a foetus? Sex can be assumed prior to birth of course. But do we take DNA from a foetus? If so, I didn't know that.

and is DNA the only characteristic (or even the most important charactetistc) we allow a person.

there you go, I've dared to poke the bear.

Sex isn't ASSIGNED at all, not at ANY point. It just is.

Scout2016 · 08/06/2025 23:15

I believe the writer Ellen E Jones did a Screenshots podcast with Mark Kermode about how great it is that sex work isn't shown in films as grim anymore but as a fab positive choice. I haven't been able to bring myself to listen, despite having been a fan of the show previously. So sorry if I have misrepresented them, although I think there was a thread on here angry and dismayed about it too.

Why would the observer choose to fawn and trip over themselves to put any of these attention seeking men on a pedestal? Bergdorfs CV is bad but it's not the worst out of the usual suspects that newspapers have on speed dial for their 'we are so oppressed' rent-a-quote when it's RainbobbinsSharkJumpedMonth. There's a number of individuals who had they not had the correct characteristic would have been cancelled a long time ago if they were being treated equally. Instead there is a free pass for a questionable resume. It's definitely a consistent theme.

Everyone of the Rent A Quotes can't do an interview without shouting Me and I a lot. They are the only pronouns they need and use.

No. It's only one aspect of all the many many wonderful things that make up a human being.

That does not mean, however, that ones biological sex somehow becomes a matter of opinion, taste or self-assigned, or that it has no relevance or consequence to how one experiences life.

It was classic. ISTR it came out the day of an early WPUK meeting in London and was passed around at the MN pre- meeting meetup.

It’s hard to think of an adequate response to this display of stupidity and ignorance, even more so on a site called Mumsnet.

Ha yes, and the self-satisfied "look how brave I am to challenge you hateful bigots" at the end. "Sure, bro" as my teens would say.
