This is an excoriating response to Steve Bunce from Jon Pike. Of course he can't admit that he got this utterly wrong, because that would make him a nailed on misogynist wouldn't it?

  1. Thanks for replying 2) The first problem with your reply is that you did reject tests: you questioned the need for them in the case of Khelif (below) 3) Instead of giving some credibility to the sex tests carried out by the IBA in accredited labs, you chose to believe and repeat a conspiratorial conjecture that these were somehow fabricated. 4) You endlessly praised Khelif and Lin Yu ting. You described the Paris competition as an 'atrocity' and an 'ordeal' - which is accurate, but you meant that it was an atrocity for Khelif, not for the women he hit. 5) You denounced, frequently, venomously, and misogynistically, those like @jk_rowling who highlighted the real atrocity here. (You are continuing with these childish and demeaning attacks). Your schtick was to pose as a boxing insider, an expert, who was explaining to the stupid and 'hysterical' outsiders what was really going on. But you couldn't recognise or call out what was going on in front of your eyes. 6) Had you taken this seriously, you would be able to reach for words now, that you had uttered then. An expression of caution, a recognition of concern, a proposal for delay and reform. You can't produce such words, because you didn't utter them. You were a gung ho supporter of Khelif, not an impartial, critical commentator. 7) All the evidence now being produced like this nitter.net/ripx4nutmeg/status/181… doesn't fully convey the way that you continuously shilled for the IOC. I listened to @BBCSport through the games: you pushed out propaganda and apologias endlessly, for Khelif, the IOC and the Algerian government. 8) You try to excuse this by pointing to the undoubted corruption in the IBA. But there is no reason to think that the tests themselves were corrupt, and the intellectual corruption of the IOC policy of 'passport sex' was plain to see. You said nothing about this. 9) At no time then or now have you paused to ask yourself 'What if I'm wrong?' Obviously, this is a difficult question, because the answer is: 'I watched men hitting women in the ring, and justified it, rather than condemning it. Instead, the people I condemned were those who tried to stop it.' That fact is difficult for you to confront. 10) That's a question for you to ask yourself. But I have one for you too: Have you no shame?

Nice. And true.

How do these people live with themselves I ask? How do they look at themselves in the mirror and think they are right and honourable and on the side of justice?

It's beyond my understanding.

But He will double down and we are all being so mean.

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 03/06/2025 12:08

I just don't understand any of these men, they must have such an underlying hatred for women in general it's actually frightening. I can only assume that they don't care about any women that they know either.

Excellent. Bunce is lying through his teeth here. He seems to think people don't have receipts. 😬

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 03/06/2025 12:09

He knows people have receipts, they're showing him they have them, and he's still doubling down on it, he's an absolute moron. His reply to Sharron Davies was nothing short of contemptible, he really hates women.

Beowulfa · 03/06/2025 12:20

What did he say to Sharron?

This complete denial of clear evidence reminds me of a piss-take from The Day Today. They showed the infamous clip of Rodney King being pushed to the ground and beaten. They played it backwards with an indignant voiceover saying "look, the police were just helping him to his feet!"

I can't find it now, but it was patronising and sneering, he doesn't seem to do that when replying to Jon Pike, even though Jon completely agrees with Sharron, I wonder why that is? 🤔

Off to the burns unit for Buncie. Stat.

myplace · 03/06/2025 13:10

I would love someone like him to explain their thought process.

We have had gracious people post here about their transition from full on ‘be kind’, through ‘oh, well we have to be sensible about certain situations’ to ‘bloody hell that’s outrageous!’.

I want to know why he held the original position, the moment he thought ‘oh shit’, and how he’s managing the denial now.

I've been listening to Helen Joyce's recent interview

s

And as a result of conversations about it with a couple of men as well as women, I have my own explanation.

I'd say that Steve Bunce and the other men who insist that Khelif is a woman do so because in their high-status male-orientated world no self-respecting man would want to be a woman. Woman is low-status and 'other'. They assume that any man who wants to be acknowledged as a woman can't have been a real man in the first place. He must be trans — because no real man would want the shame and humiliation and loss of status that comes with being a woman. This 'not a real man' thing is something that camp gay men face.

In Bunce's world the default is male and anything else is just an unfortunate anomaly. When someone like Khelif comes along people like Bunce and all the other 'real' men who can't relate to women and have limited respect for or interest in women are at some level, possibly unconsciously, embarrassed and confused. They and just want to get Khelif out of the 'male' category and hand him over to women to deal with. And of course until recently they could rid themselves of this troublesome issue and also be celebrated for it and told how progressive they were. Women might complain about it, but to them we really are 'only' women and can safely be ignored.

Now decent men such as Oliver Brown and Jon Pike have spoken up, things get more complicated and Bunce and cronies run the risk of being shamed for what seem to them like their perfectly reasonable views. But I'm guessing that those men who stick up for women and appear to understand women's concerns may also fall into the 'not real men' category, so their arguments — troubling and backed up by science as they are — can still be dismissed.

Well.

That's even more depressing.

And you are possibly right.

As the esteemed GG said- women never really understand how much men hate them.

Szygy · 03/06/2025 14:15

Someone on TwiX posted an old clip of Bunce on TV with another blokey bloke chortling and yelling about something or other. They ‘humorously’ showed a grid of photos to comment on for some reason and one of them was of Jade Goody - not sure whether she’d actually died by that point or not but it was clearly when she was at least ill with cancer because when Bunce waded straight in with really nasty mockery about her appearance and was she wearing a bad wig, hahahahahahaaar - even the other presenter, who was almost equally blokey, backed off very quickly and did a sort of ‘er, hang on mate…..’

The charming Bunce acknowledged it with a ‘well, yeah I know BUT….’ And really wasn’t for stopping his vileness.

Says a lot.

FranticFrankie · 03/06/2025 14:26

Trying to think of a word to rhyme with Bunce......

Bunch was very supportive of boxing promoter Frank Maloney, who became Kelly Maloney.

I think they think men's desires need to be met. They may think it's a bit strange, but if that's what their mate want, then they are all for us - winding women up in the process is just an added benefit.

Igmum · 03/06/2025 15:27

Absolutely bloody brilliant response thank you Jon Pike 👏

100%.

Males competing for status within the male hierarchy often don't even see women as part of that hierarchy at all, therefore they are not important/don't matter/don't exist.
