There is a new Community Interest Company to support breast feeding mothers. "We are a mother-led breastfeeding support organisation." https://momab.org.uk/

and from a post on X "We are a single-sex mother-to-mother breastfeeding support organisation. The only males in our meetings will be very young ones!"

I was catching up on the Inciteful Sisters podcast yesterday. At the end of this episode from February https://open.spotify.com/episode/3508DFp09dLpptWd2EmLlx the speaker talked about setting up an alternative to LLL. Is this likely one and the same? Assuming it is, I've donated as it sounds like they are hoping to roll this out further.
The podcast is inspiring and maddening at turns. I cannot believe that Ruth and colleagues are having to reinvent the wheel, to actually re-create LLL.

[As an aside, Inciteful Sisters is amazing! If any of you are on here, then many thanks indeed. Just listened to Episode 13 which is gobsmackingly stellar.]

I understand the concerns about due diligence @RobinHeartella and @IReallyLoveItHere and whilst I know nothing more abot the group than what I have already posted JK Rowling has since posted on X that she has donated to them and I assume she or her team must check things before doing so.

https://x.com/jk_rowling/status/1928022220648952176

For those not on X she says:

"I’ve donated to this new breastfeeding support charity. Mother-to-mother support is incredibly important at what many women can find a challenging time.
1/2

You get a free gift, too. The gift of annoying men who can’t abide biological women having anything that excludes them.
2/2"

Helping women to breastfeed and support them on their journey is a really great thing to do. They are a new venture and will want to reach as many mothers as possible which will cost money to set up properly and safely. I hope it goes well for them and they aren’t targeted by men that this can mean absolutely nothing to.

IReallyLoveItHere · 29/05/2025 12:21

Got to admit I'm a bit worried for them now.

Too much exposure and I'm sure much more in donations than they expected. They'll need to figure out what to do with all that money and will be scrutinised by those who wish them harm.

They'd be best off spending their time identifying similar groups and passing on some donations than trying to figure out how to upscale.

Manderleyagain · 29/05/2025 13:04

I completely understand some of the concerns raised here, and I am also a bit worried for them. But I am sure they were not naive about the amount of exposure they might get on X if they launched as they did. My very brief internet sleuthing also found that at least one is one of the trustees of LLL who was ousted and are very experienced in the field. They could have set up a group and only quietly stuck to the sex realist language. In some ways that could have stored up trouble for later if any trans advocates found them. It might actually be safer to go straight in with "mother centred" front and centre now. And I assume it's important to the women in question that they carry forward the philosophy which was central to the bf orgs only a few years ago.

I agree with a PP that individual volunteers, and other small local orgs will be sensible in practice, and if you go to a group there is almost no chance of meeting a bloke trying to breastfeed. More likely a mum who doesn't want to be called mum. But it is true that pretty much all of the breastfeeding national organisations have diluted their mother centred approach, and the drugs in breastmilk service has been studiously silent on cross sex hormones or inducing lactation on males.
For example (bfn has not gone as all In as LLL but still):

I guess they will be able to close the donations facility if they get more than they can handle.

WarriorN · 29/05/2025 13:51

I will say the long running NE LLL is women exclusive. it has a fantastic fb group

WarriorN · 29/05/2025 13:53

Wouldn’t be surprised if some of the leaders there are part of this

ShinyBlueTractor · 29/05/2025 14:03

I'm sure this has been discussed before, so apologies for duplication, but does anyone know what positions NCT and BFN take on inclusion of trans women in BF services? I'm aware of the LLL stuff (which is appalling) but I feel like I haven't heard much about the others. It's probably just because I don't move in those circles any more (I used to be involved in BF support but left before a lot of the gender stuff really heated up)

NotMeekNotObedient · 29/05/2025 14:48

Brilliant! I've donated a small amount.

ChristinaXYZ · 29/05/2025 15:14

Just to add that it has been picked up by the Telegraph

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/05/29/jk-rowling-donates-to-female-only-breastfeeding-charity-nhs/

I hope with this publicity that they get the funds to set up an office to screen their volunteers properly.

That is nice and I'm glad of it - but just wanted to point out that away from the public eye these things are still common. My local children's centre has a weekly breastfeeding support and the language on the posters is women centred. Never heard of a man turning up trying to bf. With the local demographics that we have, I expect any man trying to do that would be yelled out of there.

Apart from the big names like LLL, breastfeeding groups that are "inclusive" (of men...) I think are the exception rather than the norm.

My local one does it without a song or dance, is run cheaply with mostly volunteers and one paid leader I believe, so I'm wondering why this one makes a big deal on twitter and is asking for donations. What's to spend on?

I'm a long time BF supporter at a group like this.

Decent spaces are not cheap to rent, especially if you want to hold a group weekly.
They may need to buy equipment (dolls, knitted boobs, books, toys for accompanying toddlers, pillows), plus things like tea, coffee, boxes of tissues, etc.
To run a regular group with decent support you need a strong team and may need to pay for volunteers to undergo peer support training.

I don't think BfN has said anything about tw inducing lactation.

I know one of these former LLL leaders and Trustees. Having been treated so appallingly by this ideologically captured organisation, I think it is admirable that they have set up this new group to continue to share their experience and skills. The main costs I guess will be for premises and ongoing training.

DaisiesandButtercups · 29/05/2025 16:34

BfN, ABM and NCT are all fully “inclusive” like LLL. This new group will be a first in being single sex in principle rather than just because no male has yet turned up wanting to join and receive help to “breastfeed” a baby.

I might be mistaken but as far as I can discover all but 2 of the directors of MoMa Breastfeeding were previously directors of LLLGB.

Brilliant that Rowling is supporting this.

That's just the profile raising it needs.

I'd just like to see the papers stop talking about transwomen, and talk about men, or trans identified men, or males.

Olderbadger1 · 29/05/2025 16:39

Ruth Lewis (who was interviewed by Inciteful Sisters - see above) was formerly LLL and is one of the co-founders of this new organisation. I have worked with her on a volunteer basis with FiLiA and have the highest regard for her integrity, courage and expertise. She is a brilliant woman; this is a brilliant initiative. Please do support it if you can. You'll be gardening in fertile soil.

This is exactly what women predicted. That women only groups will be infiltrated by men, so women will have to set up their own groups, to exclude them.

What a fucking waste of time these arseholes are putting women through.

But they will do it, it will be done, and these men will be nowhere.

Sortumn · 29/05/2025 17:16

RobinHeartella · 29/05/2025 06:43

I'm in full agreement with you about LLL, I thought that was clear in my comment but perhaps not.

So I actually contacted a couple of local organisations to try and sign up for training to be a breastfeeding counsellor. [Edit to be clear - not recently, a year or two back]. One didn't reply and the other said they didn't require any more sign ups at this time. This left me with an impression that there's no shortage of breastfeeding counsellors, certainly not in my area.

As for "publicity"...
"Publicity" for my local breastfeeding support mostly consists of a line in the children's centre schedule, as well as some printed out A4 pages stuck up around the children's centre. I would not want it publicised more widely as I wouldn't want anyone other than genuine local mums turning up.

Sorry to sound like a negative nelly but I am cautious and cynical by nature especially to do with anything where vulnerable mums are concerned

Edited

I'm really pleased to see this new org. There's no knowing how many bfcs currently use mother and woman erasing language. Those that no longer fit the ideals of LLL will defect to a well run bf organisation that is woman centred.

Our community hvs ran a rather useless breastfeeding service which was THE breastfeeding service in town. They usually just asked the now experienced mothers how to help. The problem being that the more experienced mothers were than asked not to come with our babies as they/we had toddlers in tow and some women just wanted to put their baby on the floor and ignore them for an hour.

While the effect of the SC ruling is not as quick as I would like it to be, on hospitals, prisons, changing rooms etc, I would like to spend a few minutes enjoying the fact that an organisation like this one can now exists, no ifs no buts no "Am I allowed to ask for a GRC?".

loveyouradvice · 29/05/2025 21:02

This is just SO heart-warming... lots of coverage on social media, in the Times and the Telegraph so they really can re-invent the wheel with all the donations and requests flooding in ... a mother-centred nation-wide volunteer-run breast feeding service.

As they so rightly say, what LLL was a before men disrupted it.

Yes. It does limit the ability of men with a fetish to trash these organisations doesn't it?

TooTiredToType77 · 29/05/2025 21:55

Ruth especially is an amazingly experienced LLL Leader and previous Director of LLL. I'm thrilled they've set up a specifically women only CIC. I believe Ruth was also party to the conversations with the charity commission about clarifying that LLL GB was already a single sex organisation and could legitimately exclude all males. I'm sure they will set to this new charity to clearly be single sex and with the SC ruling can confidently promote women only mother to mother support (again)
