Article

Thoughts?
Apologies if this has already been posted but I couldn't see it

Looks like there's no concrete plans yet but this is an interesting subject and I'm curious what you ladies think.

Christ. The Daily Fail.

Is the Guardian a better fit for you?

maltravers · 27/05/2025 16:22

They’re talking about chemical castration aka puberty blockers. Fine for gnc teenagers but a medical crime for sex offenders according to your more diehard liberal.

Yeah, I know it's very click baity coming from them. Sorry for the shoddy source, was more of a 'huh, that's interesting'.

Chemical castration isn't as attention grabbing though. I assume from the small bit of the Guardian article I could read that it would be offered as an alternative to staying in prison. Not holding men down and castrating them.
Not convinced it would stop potential offending though.

JazzyJelly · 27/05/2025 16:26

I'd be concerned about letting dangerous men out of prison on this basis. I assume it would be enforced somehow, but the number of released prisoners who manage to get their tags off doesn't make me hopeful. And does it prevent reoffending?

Christinapple · 27/05/2025 17:02

I think there's already a thread on this. Anyway might want to change the title to "chemical castrated". Castrated on its own would mean physical removal.

The OP is quoting the title as it's written. That's why the OP has used quotation marks.

They trailed this on R4 news last week. There are an awful lot of hurdles to overcome before this could be introduced. On the radio piece, I believe they said that trials haven’t started in this country yet. In the other countries trialling it atm, most are running it as a voluntary process and not an enforced one.

If they’re ever to actually introduce it here then the safety and efficacy of the drugs would need to be confirmed, they need to decide HOW they’d be taken, how compliance would be enforced and who the prescribers would be (would most local GPs want to be involved in this? I doubt it).

Then you get to the stickier bits. How do you know it’ll stop the offender? Rape isn’t just about sexual gratification; it’s also about humiliation and control. Chemical (or physical) castration wouldn’t stop all sex offenders from offending, so what do you do with those that won’t stop? Is it fair to the victims that these men get to stay out of prison (or come out early) - where’s the punishment aspect?

murasaki · 27/05/2025 17:20

Yes, it would be a worry that it would led to early release.

And then you get the (albeit rare) cases like Andrew Malkinson.....

2024onwardsandup · 27/05/2025 17:21

Good

moto748e · 27/05/2025 18:10

A really bad idea and a really bad precedent. It's a bit sharia, isn't it? Shall we cut the hands off thieves? And, I can't help feeling, done with the worst possible motives.

maltravers · 27/05/2025 18:13

I imagine the idea is something like this: those who wish to come out early on licence will attend a doctor’s for a monthly injection. Others will prefer to stay inside and not have the jab. Not sure what I think about it tbh, but I think it’s probably reasonable to consider it and explore, which is what Shabana M seemed to be talking about on the news the other day.

murasaki · 27/05/2025 18:26

Well they might just come out out of prison early and use object to assault women instead as the impulse to control would still be there.

LlynTegid · 27/05/2025 18:27

I don't think it will happen. An idea being floated and something else will be done instead.

FictionalCharacter · 27/05/2025 18:31

Des the typical terrible headline they are talking about CHEMICAL “castration”, not lopping their balls off.
This isn’t any form of actual castration. It’s drug treatment to reduce sex drive. Some sex offenders have been known to ask for it.

SwanOfThoseThings · 27/05/2025 18:33

Castration does not prevent sexual intercourse, or rape. It's a myth that castration causes impotence.
