1536 at the Almeida

Wondered if anyone else has seen this. Saw it last night and can’t stop thinking about it. It’s a debut play, set against the backdrop of Anne Boleyn’s arrest. Tudor dress, but very modern dialogue, performed brilliantly by a small cast.

I absolutely loved it, but I can’t shake off a horribly low mood today. I think due to how timeless the deep, deep misogyny felt, and how the methods of oppression are still pretty much the same 500 years on.

Yes, I saw it, it was a bit depressing, but also interesting. I do think we’ve made some progress since then, although not enough obviously. The acting was also excellent I thought. I was right at the front, so could see the expressions on the actors’ faces and in their eyes.

It’s back! At the Ambassadors in the West End and brilliant. Book now!

I loved it so much I have been to the Ambassador’s too! And it is still utterly brilliant!

Remember it is fiction. The misogyny feels the same as today's misogyny because it was written today.

KingscoteStaff · 10/05/2026 13:28

We saw it last night and it was amazing - try and get a ticket if you can!

Grammarnut · 10/05/2026 14:56

You will be watching today's misogyny rather than that of 1536. If you want that you should watch some sixteenth century plays, I suggest Arden of Faversham (wife murders husband) and probably The Taming of the Shrew.

@Gerri1992and @Grammarnut you might be right, and I will definitely take a look at Arden of Faversham. Of course something written today can reflect structures from the past if those structures have essentially stayed the same and for the same underlying reasons.
