Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

This really is a very interesting and informative conversation and highly recommend. I’ve also listened to ‘The Hearing - A Legal Podcast’ (episode 113). I could happily listen to a ‘Daly’ podcast!

SternJoyousBee · 14/05/2025 17:25

I listened to this earlier today and loved it so much I think I will treat myself to another listen tonight.

Highly recommended.

It’s good, isn’t it? His explanation of Jolyon Maugham to the American lawyers is amusing (“Tax law??!”) and there’s even a nod to Mumsnet at the end.

SternJoyousBee · 14/05/2025 21:41

The story about the tax had me giggling.

CarefulN0w · 15/05/2025 07:06

I enjoyed that. Not a JM fan.

Thank you so much for sharing this, I listened today on my commute and thoroughly enjoyed it. Flowers

Thank you for this link. Very interesting.

Peter is very easy to listen to. I love to listen to people who are experts / very knowledgeable in their field; Peter, Naomi, Kathleen, Helen and Maya are all always very good and pleasurable to listen to. RMW and SW not so much 😂

BettyFilous · 15/05/2025 22:56

I listened to this on my commute too. It was a great long interview. Peter Daly sounds like a thoroughly decent chap. I’d happily buy him a pint and I think he’d be good company.

Hermiaxx · 16/05/2025 08:50

I have now also listened to Maya Forstater on Trigonometry. This was also interesting and what a truly lovely person!

Opinionpolecat · 17/05/2025 07:57

I really enjoyed listening to this, very informative, and Peter Daly sounds like a great bloke.

fabricstash · 17/05/2025 07:59

Great podcast and just interesting to hear the journey

BettyFilous · 17/05/2025 08:13

Listening to Peter is like the recording of Akua Reindorf, Ben Cooper, Naomi Cunningham and Sarah Vine at the recent Sex Matters event at LSE. When you listen to the lawyers on the sex realist side of this they are all sensible, moderate and stick to the law and facts. I find it reassuring and relaxing to hear them speak truth to power.

Hermiaxx · 17/05/2025 08:35

I listened to the LSE talk too and agree with @BettyFilous - listening to these podcasts is both relaxing and reassuring! I’m sorry there isn’t more input from the TRAs as I think every time I hear Bob the barrister or the fox killer speak I’m sure another person is peaked!

ItsCoolForCats · 17/05/2025 13:56

I also agree. Peter Daly is so measured and reassuring. Compare this to the histrionics coming from Jolyon Maugham. Initially, I was a bit worried about all the talk about taking it to the ECHR, but I'm not anymore after listening to Peter Daly, Akua Reindorf, Michael Foran etc.

There is a conflict of rights. When the law was presumed to be on certified sex (and self ID being the default as a consequence) it caused so much strife, as evidenced by the many tribunals. And the EHRC admitted during the SC case that the law based on certified sex was problematic. It afforded certain rights to trans people at the expense of women's human rights.

Defining women legally in terms of biology clears all this up. Trans people still have protection under the pc of gender reassignment. The Equality Act carefully balances everyone's rights.

I am listening to this talk right now. It’s brilliant so far. Really recommend it

Thank you for sharing that - really enjoyed listening.

I went looking for more podcasts about the SC case and found this gem https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/ep13-trans-womens-rights-and-what-the-supreme/id1781301613?i=1000706327345

They talk to a transwoman doctor who comes up with some rather dubious science to explain being trans as something observable in the brain, but apart from that starts off sounding fairly reasonable and saying good faith dialogue about people's concerns about trans people is fine. Then it starts to descend, via the obligatory rubbishing of JK Rowling, how science shows transwomen should be in womens sport because they're weaker than "ciswomen", into the usual far right/American christian right conspiracy, the idea that trans people now aren't allowed into any toilets and are confined to their houses because of the urinary leash (yes, really) and ends with the revelation that this all "does fit the UN definition of genocide". It really gets quite mindboggling.
