‘It’s devastating’: Trans cricketers feel betrayed by the game they love

They can't be their authentic selves any more.

“Most sports are not an environment trans people want to be in. Open cricket is predominantly men and is not the nicest place for women to play cricket. It involves prejudice."

And women's sports are for women. They're not an environment they want men in.

I thought 'taking your whole self to work' had been quietly dropped.. I must be wrong.😕
It's such a bad idea - you should bring your professional self to work, and the fact that you are a Charlton Athletic fan or a pigeon fancier or a member of a barbershop quartet may be very important to you, but it is not part of your professional self.

That goes for LARPing as anything, including as a member of the opposite sex.
Not professional.

Quite.

And you try 'bringing your whole self' if you happen to be a woman wanting sex based rights, or an out lesbian believing in biological sex.

It is not a genuine value applied equally to all; its just marketing around a specific enablement of selected behaviours without responsibility or inconvenient boundaries, and connected to creating the dominance of selected political views while policing and silencing others.

Pleasantsort · 08/05/2025 21:53

I think it's really unfair that I can't play for Celtic FC Women's team but you know what ? I'm 54 and a lard arse and was shite even when I was young enough.(And they didn't have such teams anyway). So I go and cheer the women on when I can afford to go up there and go and see women's clubs down here. Some things AREN'T fair chaps. Boo hoo 💔 Find some 5's that you can do. Or form yer own teams.

Pleasantsort · 08/05/2025 21:54

Or cricketty teams . Know nothing about cricket but same principle

SirChenjins · 08/05/2025 21:59

Well it’s a good job women won’t be playing there, isn’t it.

My heart is literally breaking for the poor TIMs 😭

What about trans men?

I know of a very good young female cricketer who transitioned. I believe she's been happier and more stable in her trans identity than she was previously, but had to come to terms with the level at which she could play cricket on male teams being recreational rather than competitive.

SidewaysOtter · 08/05/2025 22:09

Open cricket is predominantly men and is not the nicest place for women to play cricket.

The women's game is not a refuge for men who find the men's game is not to their taste. Suck it up, lads.

It’s like the blokes that play Sunday cricket against teams comprising ‘dads and lads’. Most would retire not out on 50. But you always get some prick who loves to get runs against 14 year olds and unfit dads who stay in the crease (when the game is already in the bag) rather than allow one of the youngsters further down the order a chance at batting.

Or radical suggestion, but just start your own trans cricket teams. Won't happen though. So much easier to stomp over the rights of women to have their own team and then bleat when they won't let them play.

Exactly, knowing too much about people with whom you have an arms length relationship can create more problems than it solves. In the past I’ve worked with people who overshare, and it puts you in an invidious position because they expect the same in return, and no way was I ever going to spill my guts to ‘Joy in accounts’!

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 08/05/2025 21:08

@LadyBracknellsHandbagg Oh Christ, I already spend far too much time most days looking for my keys. Now I'm going to have to find my true, authentic self too?!

Don’t forget your WHOLE self, that really epitomises your ‘identiteeeee’. I need to have a word with my boss about whether this is actually a load of old bollocks.

Ok, I’ve had a word with myself/herself/themselves and I can confirm it is indeed, a load of old bollocks. As you were.

CigarettesAndLoveBites · 08/05/2025 22:39

Open and mixed cricket remains available, but that provides little comfort.

Indeed.

And when trans events were held, no one showed up!

Because they only feel trans when they are validated by other women.

Once again, women are not support animals for men.

JanesLittleGirl · 08/05/2025 22:42

It's on the tip of my tongue. Just a minute... Here it is:

My heart bleeds purple piss for these wankers.

As you were.

CowboyFromHell · 08/05/2025 22:45

My true self is a 6ft 28 year old Scandinavian blonde. But fuck me if i can't manage others to see past myn51 year old 5 foot 1; 13 stone arthritis-ridden self.

Oh well, maybe you can identify as a 6ft 28 yr old Scandinavian blond instead. Maybe add it into your work email signature just so everyone knows?

Well, it is a bit too wide to bowl a maiden over, But they are really trying to spin it to appeal to people, however it is a bit of a duck really. It is all a bit googly.

Bye

Hedgehogmud · 08/05/2025 22:56

This authentic self thing at work thing is just so puzzling. I don’t do anything particularly womanly and authentic at work. My professional self goes to work.I do my job. I use the single cubicle toilets (tiny workplace). I’ll chat about pets, holidays and food and go home. My authentic self doesn’t really get a look in and I’m perfectly happy with that.
This is about ministering to other people’s insecurities. That’s what counselling is for, surely?

dubaichocolate · 08/05/2025 23:17

I think seeing as being your “true self” requires wigs, makeup, hormones and sometimes surgery it’s on a level with the Kardashians preaching self-acceptance.

NPET · 08/05/2025 23:30

MyrtleLion · 08/05/2025 19:57

Of course I was mocking the men who said they could only be their authentic selves playing women's cricket. How was that not obvious?

It was obvious!

NPET · 08/05/2025 23:34

I don't like cricket.
I don't think I should have to read about it. I think male cricketers and female cricketers should be forced to play together until they're all bowled out.

There all standing at silly point now they've been bowled out with a Yorker.

Oohhh!!! You lobbed that one Gail. It was a bouncer, indeed! It was just the wicket! I am in deep, I declare!! But I am not out, not even stumped! I am sure we can slip in some corkers yet!
