Young teen bra fitting single sex assured?

AnotherDayInParadise43 · 05/05/2025 18:50

Following the thread earlier about which ships definitely have single sex changing rooms, I need to find somewhere to take a 12 year old for her 1st bra fitting. Where can we go that will absolutely, definitely be single sex, woman only changing room and fitter? TIA

I took my 11 year old to M&S, I'm not sure of the policy guarantees however I stayed in the cubicle with her all the way through so I was sure there was nothing untoward going on.

Well I took my 10 year old to M&S and the lady there told me she was “waiting to see what they’ll do now after the ruling”.
She confirmed to me that her job had in recent months involved “measuring men for bras” and explained all but one of them had walked outside of the cubicle , with other women present as they “liked getting reactions”.
Safe to say, your query is a valid one OP and I would be keen to know the answer!

Quelle surprise. 🙄😡

We aren't going to one of those places. In my generation a teen girl's 1st bra fitting didn't involve being part of a man's fetish and will not be teaching this teen that it's OK for a man to be anywhere near her when she's changing, unless she expressly chooses that.

I think all bra fitting would be in an individual room. I think that your DD could use her words and say “not that person” if the assistant made her uncomfortable in any way. And try as I might, I cannot find anyone online who has had any kind of ‘incident’ or ‘trauma’ at a bra fitting.
So I think you may be overthinking this a tad…

Why would they need to have had an ‘incident’ or ‘trauma’, is a woman’s decision to only get undressed in a space with only other women present invalidated if they haven’t previously been attacked or traumatised in that scenario? Can we not just be allowed to have a preference based on our feelings of dignity and privacy and comfort? Why should we have to stifle those feelings in order to make a bloke feel better about himself? My 11yr old should not need to tell a man in a frock that she is uncomfortable with him measuring her chest, it should just be standard that the man would not be forcing himself into that scenario. I should not be confronted with the sight of a man in a bra in the M&S changing rooms because he wants to be validated as womanly.

We need to stop enabling these men using us to fulfil their fantasies, they can do fashion shows in their undies for their friends if they need an audience of willing sycophants and they can stay the hell out of our changing rooms.

My daughter has always had good experiences at our local John Lewis and Bravissimo.

However I’ve always watched like a hawk to make sure she wasn’t ever left uncomfortable and to advocate for her if necessary.

I would not stay for a fitting if there was a man in the fitting room (either as customer or staff).

Boudiccaofsteel · 06/05/2025 19:12

Small independent boutique is the way to go better choice of bras especially small back sizes

Datun · 06/05/2025 19:54

I would like Marks and Spencers to be asked whether or not they allow men to fit bras, or let male customers in the fitting room when 12-year-old girls are having their first bra fitting.

If they're so convinced of the right side of history, then let's hear it

And read it in all the newspapers

There was a poster on this board many years ago who claimed to be transwoman bra fitter. I recall they claimed to be in a store at Marble Arch - we all assumed it was M & S. They were very proud of themselves and a bit surprised at the negative reaction from women on here.

lovegoodlovegood · 07/05/2025 15:15

There’s an independent fitter who will fit via video/over the phone etc if that’s any help? She’s on Instagram

IDontHateRainbows · 07/05/2025 15:26

Rather than try and find somewhere that says they can guarantee this, unlikely before the new ruling has time to implement, just go to a store and if there are no men around and measurer is female in an enclosed room then I can't see what the problem is.

IDontHateRainbows · 07/05/2025 15:28

Oh and john lewis do lovely padded starter bras my daughter has just developed and we had good service and products there

EvenTheReceptionStaffHaveLeft · 07/05/2025 15:54

I would recommend Bravissimo for a decent fitting.

I don’t know about the “fetishists” but I do know that DH is allowed in the fitting room with me as I can’t actually dress myself so he always helps me when I’m trying on clothes.

Then those spaces are no longer single sex. Which will result in women removing themselves. And is unlawful if they are signposted as female.

“New ruling has time to implement” - it’s not a new ruling and organizations have to implement it immediately.

These are the people the TRAs need to start getting angry with, not TERFs.

But they won't because a) it's much easier to pick on women, and b) half of them probably share the same fetishes anyway. (That's probably unfair, but I'm past caring.)

I've posted this before, but I recently sat next a bloke in a dress/wig combo on the tube. He was looking at some notes on his phone which formed a list of points relating to his "identity" as a women, including "how to improve orgasm". I strongly object to being unwillingly involved in this man's fetish; it made me feel quite queasy.

Yeah but if someone wants to look at their phone on a train.... I mean ask Helen Joyce

They are wrong to do so. The law is the law. The Equality Act has been law since 2010, the Supreme Court judgement in April 2025 simply clarified what that law always was. It applies right now.

Your employer is exposed to be sued if they do not follow the law and the judgement, right now. That they are waiting shows that they don’t really care about women and/or that they legal or HR advice the are following is flawed.

Each cubicle is single sex. DH and I get shown to a large accessible cubicle. At no point is DH in a cubicle with anyone other than me.

I do understand that women need to be safe but I need to try on clothes and as a female (as in born female, given birth to children type female) I shop in female clothes shops. My favourite shops only sell women’s clothes so only have female changing. In all honestly most of the changing areas have chairs for partners (male or female) to sit on while their other halves pop in and out of cubicles for opinions anyway. Even the lingerie shop Boux has sofas inside the first part of the fitting rooms area where partners sit and wait.
