Should Lucy Powell resign?

I agree with every word in Brendan O'Neill's article about Lucy Powell's disgraceful attitude on Any Questions. This was not misspeaking it was a mask slipping.
I'm shocked.

This isn't even close to an apology.

In the heat of a discussion on AQ, I would like to clarify that I regard issues of child exploitation & grooming with the utmost seriousness. I’m sorry if this was unclear. I was challenging the political point scoring around it, not the issue itself. As a constituency MP I’ve dealt with horrendous cases. This Gvt is acting to get to the truth, and deliver justice.

The ugly truth about Lucy Powell’s grooming gangs comments

Lucy Powell's dismissal of the rape gangs as a ‘dog whistle’ was an honest expression of Labour’s exasperation with this pesky scandal.

Interesting how, in his defence of her, Wes Streeting says she misspoke and ‘everyone makes mistakes’ - can’t imagine him extending that courtesy to a member of another political party.

LizzieSiddal · 04/05/2025 21:28

I’m a Labour supporter and think she should resign. I was listening live to the programme and was so shocked at what she said, despicable women.

PruthePrune · 04/05/2025 21:31

This arrogant dismissal of people's concerns over this and many other issues is one of the reasons why Reform are doing so well.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 04/05/2025 18:20

Nobody should be surprised. Throwing accusations at anyone who challenges Labour's sacred castes is how they operate. Unable to see any issue that falls outside their narrow student politics framework.
Powell outed herself and the Labour party as completely uncaring about the vicitms of this - just seeing the issue as an opportunity to have a go at the Reform party. Classic.

To be fair to some women such as Jess Philips, I don’t think they all think the same as Lucy Powell.

And let’s remember the last Tory goverment didn’t do very much about these gangs. They are calling for a national inquiry now, why didn’t they authorise one when in power?

Starmer should sack her.

Haaaaaaa!!!

As.
If.

They’re really covering each other atm

I just listened. It’s nasty. Labour appear nasty from this.

AnneLovesGilbert · 04/05/2025 21:44

Great article, thanks for sharing. I have a lot of time for Brendan and no time for Powell, she’s disgusting. She should be sacked but she won’t be, her comments echo Starmer’s thoughts I imagine.

SpottedDonkey · 04/05/2025 21:52

I agree that Powell’s comments were a case of the liberal left’s mask slipping. Just like Gordon Brown’s ‘bigoted woman’ comment all those years ago revealed the depth of their contempt for the white working class.

Labour will always put the interests of certain sanctified minority groups which reliably vote for them ahead of those of abused, exploited women & girls. I could say much more, but I would be banned, so 🤐

GailBlancheViola · 04/05/2025 22:00

Lucy Powell should not be given the option of resigning she should be sacked but neither of those will happen because the Labour Party have utter disdain for the white working class and women and girls of that class in particular.

EdithStourton · 04/05/2025 22:02

I've just read the article, and this jumped out at me;
We’ve had Keir Starmer accuse the politicians who want an inquiry of jumping on a ‘far-right bandwagon’.
Does he not understand that by refusing a proper enquiry, and NOT sacking Lucy Powell after those appalling comments, he is 100% giving wagon-loads of fuel to every single politician prepared to tackle this issue, from Tories through Reform, right to the thuggish end of the Far Right?

He is making himself look like an absolute, Grade A, black belt, gold medallist imbecile.

The Tories did bugger all about it, and then nice middle-class people of a liberal/ left persuasion are shocked and astounded that people vote for Reform. Of course they bloody do: as far as they can tell - as I recently told a solid, hard-working LibDem - none of the three main traditional parties give a shit about anyone who hasn't got a degree and comfy income. The Tories are not, historically, the party of the poor. the LibDems have displayed an incredibly degree of idiocy by getting wrapped up in the trans flag. And now Labour...

People aren't stupid: they can make the link between a rising population and pressure on housing (which means their kids can't afford places of their own*), they notice the Lucy Powells of this world dismiss their concern and outrage about the rape of adolescent girls and worry for their own daughters and granddaughters. And they think, the big parties don't care about us, that is clear. Reform claims to, I know who I'll vote for next time.

If Reform win the next election, there will be wailing and breast-beating from the established parties, but they will only have themselves to blame.

NB. I have zero intention of voting Reform. I am a deeply disaffected former LibDem who is pissed off with the lot of them.

peanutbuttertoasty · 04/05/2025 22:09

The only thing worse than working class white people are working class white girls.

Yes to mask slipping and yes she should be sacked, alongside kier starmer who should pop his knighthood back in the post too.

Yes. I think she should resign. But I also have very little time for any Tory MPs criticising anyone else for not taking this issue seriously. Same for Farage. None of them had this issue as any part of their campaign in the general election, wasn’t mentioned in any manifesto. But a few tweets from Musk and suddenly they’re all tripping over themselves to act as though they’ve been fighting for an inquiry for years.
So in a sense, Powell wasn’t wrong. These victims get ignored for years, then a flurry of attention which then disappears and everyone forgets that they’re meant to be passionately arguing for justice. They deserve better than to be used for point scoring (and of course deserve better than the dismissal from Powell, which I agree was there, despite also agreeing that certain politicians do use it as a little trumpet without actually giving a single shit).

Nevertrustacop · 04/05/2025 22:21

Yes. Resign or be sacked.
I'm disgusted Labour are just so stupid as to give this ammunition to Reform. And I'm even more disgusted that Labour has absolutely no moral compass.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 04/05/2025 22:34

I was glad Reform gave Labour and the Conservatives a bloody nose now because hoped this will make them listen.

But it doesn’t seem so. I’m worried a Reform win in a GE is coming, yet I cannot bring myself to vote for either Conservative or Lib Dem, the way I have done in the past. And certainly not for Labour.

The least Lucy Powell can do is to resign.

Sausagenbacon · 04/05/2025 22:52

No, I think she made an unguarded remark and, Fwiw, I think it wasn't wrong in the circumstances.

ffs she was saying exactly what she thinks

worthless girls

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/05/2025 23:04

Why are we supposed to make allowances for government members poor optics?

peanutbuttertoasty · 04/05/2025 23:05

@Sausagenbacon can you explain what you mean by it wasn’t wrong?

Jess Phillips did similarly sneer and dismiss the mass rape in cologne by mainly migrant men though. Because it didn’t suit her narrative and wouldn’t make her popular with Islamist extremists types that challenge her in her constituency

It was wrong. In the circumstances and otherwise

Labour really seem to hate women. Particularly the mouthy, working class kind. The type that won’t shut up speaking uncomfortable truths.

Why won’t these women be grateful? They ought to be quiet and listen to those who know best, they are on the right side of history after all.

Like Angela Rayner?

TheWisePlumDuck · 04/05/2025 23:30

Unfortunately labour will never stand up for the girls raped by grooming gangs. They believe that they would lose a lot of votes if they did.

Frankly they are the ones displaying racism. 'Oh no, those dodgy brown people won't vote for us if we do the moral thing here'.

While some in certain communities have helped cover up these crimes, I believe the vast majority are as horrified as everyone else, and would like to see justice for those girls.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/05/2025 23:34

They’ll lose a lot of votes if they don’t.

Childrenofthestones · 05/05/2025 00:32

To paraphrase Germaine Greer, it's just as well the white working class dont realise just how much the modern left despise them.

HaveYouActuallyDoneAnyWashingThisWeekMum · 05/05/2025 06:39

Ingrained misogyny. She definitely needs to resign.
