"Call Jonathan Pie" BBC Radio 4 comedy

Episode 6 "Identity Crisis"

Jonathan (fictional radio talk show host) is attending a diversity training session and is basically saying all the things we would. A character in a comedy is saying things that wouldn't be countenanced on a factual programme.

Hope this link works.

Just came to share this too! Thought it was a great episode. Jonathan Pie highlighting a lot of the nonsense surrounding trans issues, diversity training, pronouns etc. And it’s on the BBC!

Thanks for posting this. They’ve crammed all the questions and POVs in. Very clever and funny too.

Sausagenbacon · 04/05/2025 07:07

Well, given that JP's image is of a no-holds-barred commentator, he's been strangely silent on this for the last decade (unless I've missed something), so, like Private Eye, I think 'where have YOU been until now'.

Sausagenbacon · 04/05/2025 07:10

...or maybe it's not recent

Absolutely, but this is another sign that the dam is breaking. The BBC has been preventing this point of view from being aired for years. They can no longer justify pretending it’s not happening.

Sausagenbacon · 04/05/2025 07:58

The thing is, JP, and the actor who created him, are not dependent on the BBC, and appear on other media.
Like every other supposed satarist, they have sold themselves as fearless truth-tellers when they are nothing of the sort.
This has shown ALL of them up as being spineless.

IHeartHalloumi · 04/05/2025 08:04

The Skewer (news satire remix) has had episodes riffing on the absurdity of gender ideology when it's been relevant to recent news.
I agree the BBC is very biased, but I have sympathy for freelance comics - they can't afford to be cancelled & lose their career overnight. Love to hear Reginald D Hunter on the topic!

Magentaflies · 04/05/2025 08:08

I listen to radio 4, rather than watch TV, and whilst I don’t listen avidly to the comedy on Radio 4, I used to hear quite a lot of jokes slagging sex realist women, but haven’t noticed this so much in the past couple of years. Has anyone else noticed this?

nauticant · 04/05/2025 08:19

There's still plenty of that contempt about Magentaflies. The News Quiz is often a classic example of "why can't the bigoted women just shut up?" I think it's that different programmes have different micro-cultures. Jon Holmes, who is behind The Skewer, has long been an opponent of gender ideology.

notprincehamlet · 04/05/2025 08:34

If there's a side to be on that isn't women's the BBC will be on it. The News Quiz gave a rather arsey summary of the SC's judgment so no real change there.

Justme56 · 04/05/2025 08:41

Just listened - very 🤣. Thanks for sharing.

Lambpieforme · 04/05/2025 08:44

Brilliant piece of satire, very funny.

sandgreen · 04/05/2025 08:51

Pie generally only comes to my attention when being reposted in admiration by friends who certainly wouldn’t support this argument, so wonder whether this will get on their radar or whether he’ll get any stick for it. Haven’t listened yet but will give it a go, thanks for sharing.

TangenitalContrivance · 04/05/2025 10:39

He has been disappointingly completely silent on trans issues, or rather women's rights in this area for ever. And I love the guys stuff it's incredibly scathing

crumpet · 04/05/2025 10:50

I was listening in slight disbelief last night - couldn’t believe the BBC had let it through.

Lundier · 04/05/2025 10:52

He did a whole show on Call Jonathan Pie on this 2 years ago.

crumpet · 04/05/2025 10:53

(Doh! I missed it in the OP!)

Yep

Sausagenbacon · 04/05/2025 10:58

I remember him doing one of Feminism in the last season, and I enjoyed it. But, as far as I remember, he didn't do anything on gender issues.

I think Andy Zaltzman is pro trans, or he certainly was when he had Nish Kumar and a man pretending to be a woman on his podcast, The Bugle, a few years ago. I completely went off him then.

Totally agree. He’s funny, I saw him in Shepherd’s Bush many years ago. However afaik on this issue, he’s been silent, like the others. I’m not interested in what he’s saying now. Great he’s finally found his back bone but no.

Obviously Ricky Gervais and Graham L, have been out spoken. Any other comedians with a spine?

very pro. I was a supporter of the Bugle and went to live shows. then all that happened. I even emailed Chris to say why I was leaving. Was a twat about it.

He did do one skit a few years ago, I’m not sure if he followed it up further.

The 2021 BBC podcast series from Stephen Nolan completely skewers Stonewall. He completely gets it. "You mean the government is paying a lobby group to lobby them?" etc The LGB Alliance, Kathleen Stock etc all appear & he shows how the civil service, OFCOM, BBC etc have all been captured It's still available on the BBC website.
