SFA bans trans women competing in women's football in Scotland

From next season, only those born biologically female will be allowed to take part in competitive matches in Scotland.

Its like a 1% club question: how many balls in this?

Answers may vary 😁

This is good news and appreciate the headline rewrite to reflect that, @Hoydenish!

Has anyone seen the original FA policy/press release? I can't find anything on their website. Nothing in today's articles seems to mention trans-identified women who are taking testosterone up to male levels.

Assuming they are obliged to play in the women's team, won't they have a competitive advantage, as if they were doping?

First things first and all that, but I imagine this question will come up.

OverpricedCupcake · 29/04/2025 13:42

Absolutely brilliant news 👏

WandaSiri · 29/04/2025 13:49

This is good news as it seems to cover all football, not just elite levels.

Women on testosterone are doping and so could not play in women's competitions. Although they probably just do anyway, at least at lower levels.

teawamutu · 29/04/2025 13:50

In Scotland? <Faints>

Come on FA, catch up!

ItsCoolForCats · 29/04/2025 13:57

The closing line of the article pissed me off

"There are 20 transgender women registered to play amateur football in England among the millions who play at that level".

I've seen them do that before to try to minimise the issue. Such a tiny number in the grand scheme of things 🙄 There should be NO males playing in the female category, not even one.

I think the FA (not that they are keen to preserve women's football for women) have an additional problem which is that there may already be highly paid important players at WSL clubs who are genetically male. Not MCW, more males with DSDs. I am pretty sure that is the case in one or two other European leagues. This means that the powerful clubs might resist a ruling like that, even if the FA did want to act to fix the problem.

Are they formally barred from professional women's football by a policy? I'm asking cos of all the "gotchas" circulating on social media just now about transmen in women's toilets.

I don't have specific information but PEDs are banned in football.

I just meant that I think it's unlikely that there is any kind of testing regime below a certain level of competition.

Scotland decided to become a leader in something!
What?!

C'mon England!

That should be "in something to do with women". Oops.
