Cambridge SU statement on the SC ruling

Statement on Supreme Court Equality Act Ruling
We are greatly disappointed at the Supreme Court’s ruling last week. Trans, non-binary and gender-non-conforming people have always existed and will always exist, and their identities are valid irrespective of any court ruling.
Cambridge SU is committed to understanding, listening to, and amplifying trans voices. We will defend the human rights of all our members, and particularly, at this time of global uncertainty, of trans, non-binary, and gender-non-conforming people. We will be working to understand how we can best do this within the University and reaching out to other groups, including the NUS, in order to have a national impact.
If you or someone you know is feeling anxious, unsafe or struggling due to the current circumstances, you are not alone, and we would urge you to reach out for support. We have compiled a list of local, national and university support organisations below.
Trans rights are human rights; a denial of humanity for one is a denial of humanity for all.

Unless of course you are a woman under the SC definition in which case your rights and feelings are immaterial and the SU won't waste any time or effort in defending your rights or understanding your perspective.
I'm furious with myself that I don't feel able to openly challenge this.

Why are they so stupid?

sandrevolutionary · 28/04/2025 21:15

I thought Cambridge was only for the brightest of the bright?

I could weep at the ignorance on display. Nobody's human rights or humanity have been diminished.

lcakethereforeIam · 28/04/2025 21:19

They've probably made places like this extremely unwelcoming to anyone who is remotely GC. They've been doing it for years without the slightest sniff of a statement worrying about their mental health, safety or humanity. Quite the opposite. They'd persecute them and feel virtuous while doing it.

AnSolas · 28/04/2025 21:20

Did anybody try to read the ruling or did they just want to prove why expensive tax funded education needs to be regulated?

And good luck with objective for gender-non-conforming people if or when they reach any agreement on what that means could they let the rest of the world know?

KilkennyCats · 28/04/2025 21:21

These are the brightest and best?
Humanity is doomed…
Why do they always insist that trans people have always existed and will always exist as if that was ever the fucking argument?

Helleofabore · 28/04/2025 21:22

I wonder at the careful wording though. Maybe I missed it, but it doesn’t read like they are saying we will defy the law.

They’re at Cambridge, what do you expect?

I agree, it reads to me, a bit like Hislop on HIGNFY last week.

IHeartHalloumi · 28/04/2025 21:44

Nice of them to link to support for women feeling anxious about threats of violence from male TRAs.
Oh, what's that? No support for the most marginalised group in society - a group who weren't given equal status to male students at Cambridge until 1948? What a surprise.

Gundogday · 28/04/2025 21:54

i agree, what about women! No mention of them.

Fantina · 28/04/2025 21:56

I don’t think the SU is paid much attention in Cambridge. Students are represented better by their College student unions - JCRs/MCRs. You’d hope some of them might show more critical thinking/be more circumspect with their views if they want to go into public life/law etc.

teawamutu · 28/04/2025 21:56

I think my favourite tweet of all time would be appropriate here.

Has it stopped being the training ground for wannabe politicians then? Hello Wes Streeting.

This. The student union does not, in fact, actually represent cambridge students. It represents a small subset of the student body who (probably) aren't very immersed in their studies and feel unfulfilled socially.

Your average student there is busy studying, doing sports, and having fun.

The writer of that "statement" is no doubt doing none of those things

Blah blah blah valid blah blah blah exist blah blah blah the usual old bollocks

Fantina · 28/04/2025 22:13

They don’t have a seat on any university committees that I’m aware of but I’m a few years away from Cambridge now. The SU is often criticised by students themselves and voter turnout is laughable. Although the student FB groups with posts on this have all been pro trans that I’ve seen.

Fantina · 28/04/2025 22:18

Oh and Wes Streeting was President of his College (Selwyn) JCR.

Total drivel, there's studying true but sports are not that important as it's not school.

The writer of the statement presents the mainstream view

Fantina · 28/04/2025 23:12

Sports are not that important? Clearly missed the Oxford/Cambridge boat race this month.

That is some serious committee busywork. Is this person doing a degree also, or or are they on sabbatical to be a professional meeting-goer? If the latter… why? Why would you do that? These are supposed to be the best years of your life 😂

Politican ambitions?

Lobbist for the capitalist greed money?

Wants to impress that special someone who unlike in the movies actually has no idea you exist?

Yea but.... i am guessing loads of staff in the Uni be will too busy avoiding any rep who is radical proTRA because they should have already been put on notice due to the Office for Students and also need to update their policy for women
