Did anyone watch last night.
The interview with Rosie Duffield was good, but Gillian Tett was a shock. I enjoy her articles in the FT, but, my God, I'd thought we had left 'be kind' behind.
Also, Chris Mason saying that most Labour politicians are still trying to deal with the implications of the decision, and not in a supportive way.

Agree… but I think we now expect the crap. Compared to which Kemi Badenoch seems to know exactly what she is talking about . Good to see Rosie out there though.

ZeldaFighter · 24/04/2025 08:39

Yes, very tired this morning as stayed up to watch it. Rosie was very good - I wasn't impressed with Victoria Derbyshire's gently hostile interview - felt like she was interviewing Putin, not a democratically elected MP. Great to see Rosie front and centre :-)

Scottish bloke was good and fair although a bit uneducated - we didn't see trans as a big issue....because it wasn't until Stonewall and social media picked up the ball(s) and ran with it!

Turned the other woman off and went to bed - she obviously wants to keep her Uni job!

I came to Mumsnet this morning to say I came in on the Rosie Duffield interview after it had started, so I didn’t know who she was. Just sat admiring this quiet and modest woman who was speaking so generously, tolerantly and wisely. Every point she made hit the mark.

When the interviewer asked something along the lines of Did she want to return to the Labour Party, I realised this must be Rosie Duffield, and my admiration went through the roof.

Gillian Tett, on the other hand, amazed me for the opposite reason. I get that, with her position at a university, she wants to keep on the right side of student ‘social justice warriors’.

But likening transgenderism to the gay rights movement? Really? I thought that dishonest old trope had been dropped years ago. (Because homosexuality affects no one other than gay men and lesbians, whereas transgenderism forces everyone else to comply. As well you know, Gillian.)

Sausagenbacon · 24/04/2025 08:46

Tett is a respected (generally) economic journalist, not an academic.

You mentioned Chris Mason. He was on the BBC website yesterday and got it wrong in his first paragraph -

The arguments over sex and gender, trans and women's rights have a passion, an anger and often a toxicity on both sides greater in their intensity than those over the Iraq war two decades ago, or Brexit in more recent years.

Toxicity on both sides Chris?

She’s also Provost of King’s College Cambridge! Not an academic position, but it still wouldn’t do to offend the students …

I'd never heard the term 'phallic drift' till this week and the media coverage of it has been one massive phallic drift from beginning to end. Whatever the subject it always comes back to 'what about the poor men.' Was disappointed in Victoria Derbyshire and the Duffield interview. Jesus, some of the questions ...

Absolutely agree - I started ranting at the tv when she kept going on about Alan Turing.

ItsCoolForCats · 24/04/2025 19:29

I couldn't believe it when they showed Rosie Duffield the video clip and asked if she felt she bore responsibility for how the trans woman in the clip is feeling 🙄 Was amused to find out via X that the person in the clip is called Cruella 🤣

Manderleyagain · 24/04/2025 19:44

I didn't see the beginning of the RD interview so dudbt see any clips. I'm glad, I don't think I'll go looking!

Tett might be influenced by the student warriors, but she came across as really genuinely believing what she was saying. I'm not usually one for being disappointed with celebs etc who take an opposing view of this but she really surprised me, and angered me. So ignorant. So 2017.

It wasn't Chris Mason (unless I missed him). It was another bloke, but what he said was really interesting. Labour benches were silent when the minister was making her statement. They weren't nodding and 'here here' ing. Some have said privately they are really unhappy. I hope the front bench can keep on course.

needmoresheep · 24/04/2025 19:56

Phallic drift and male privilege is driving the media, politicians and celebrities. The ‘poor trans’ reporting is bloody annoying. They appear to idea that trans will be leaving the UK in drove because it’s not safe is utter bs!

The media appear to have forgotten about the rest of the population who consider the vast majority of them tossers as our opinions are not worthy or are viewed as incorrect.

I've noticed that phrase being used again and again and again and I've never heard it challenged, it's infuriating😡

Ah yes, the women's loos at King’s - first time I’d ever encountered 'inclusive' toilets, much to my unease. And that was a good few years ago. They were quick to jump on the bandwagon with all this. So progressive dontcha know…
