A woman is an adult female, and the court has made that absolutely clear.
I actually welcome the judgment because I think it gives real clarity. It allows those that have got to draw up guidance to be really clear about what that guidance should say.
So I think it’s important that we see the judgment for what it is. It’s a welcome step forward.
It’s real clarity in an area where we did need clarity, I’m pleased it’s come about.
We need to move and make sure that we now ensure that all guidance is in the right place according to that judgment.

Thoughts?

The repetition of clarity is very much like when a child says "nae kiddin" and you know you're about to hear an outrageous lie.

Octopusespunchforfun · 22/04/2025 13:22

“This is an area where we needed clarity”

Did we though? Most sane minded people knew what a woman was, we didn’t need clarity.

Do we need clarity about what a man is?

Exactly. We never needed clarity on this.

DaydreamingDogs · 22/04/2025 12:25

He thinks TWAW so I don’t think he’s pleased about the ruling bringing clarity at all. Awful man.

I think he thinks whatever he thinks will get him votes or not get him in any hot water. His own views I would imagine he had no clue what they were it’s just any bandwagon to hitch himself to. If the bandwagon had been you aren’t to use the word orange any more he’d have gone with it. Otherwise he would say I’ll of course honour the law but I don’t agree. Courage of your (alleged) convictions kier .

HPFA · 22/04/2025 13:33

How absolutely terrible that the person in charge of making sure the law is applied is a highly qualified lawyer with a very well demonstrated ruthless streak.

I'd so much rather someone was in charge who knew how to write "DOES A WOMAN HAVE A PENIS, EH, EH EH?" 500 times on Twitter.

OuchyEars · 22/04/2025 13:49

He missed a word in that statement didn't he.
"we've got to move and blah blah blah"
That should have been "we've got to move forward" but he didn't want to say that it is a step forward, which of course it is.

The subtext is that either he thinks it's a step back, or he wants certain people to think he thinks that.
A bit like a film or series where the door is left open for the sequel. The hero/villain is probably dead, but.....

A timeline of Starmer's views:

2020: Self-ID and trans women are women
2021: 'Only women have a cervix' is something that should not be said
2022: Vast majority of women don’t have a penis
2023: 99% of women don’t have a penis
2024: Only women have a cervix and a woman is an adult female but making “jokes” about a political leader who doesn’t know the definition of woman is an “anti-trans” joke
2024: The law doesn’t need to be clarified as it’s already clear
2025: A woman is an adult female and I welcome the Supreme Court for giving clarity and now the law is clear

well, I suppose it's good that he got there eventually...

Nice. Consistency not his thing.

Felt like I was watching Black Mirror. Who would have thought a few years ago the PM would need to clarify that a woman is a biological woman.

WallaceinAnderland · 22/04/2025 14:06

He hasn't got away with this U turn. All he's managed to do is piss off absolutely everyone.

Cowards gotta coward.

Octopusespunchforfun · 22/04/2025 14:09

What’s the phrase? Weak men create hard times.

I think you can conclude that the government aren’t going to waste any political capital changing legislation.

I suspect a consequence will be that many organisations will think it’s easier to have unisex spaces, and women will have to fight harder for single sex provision, but that can at least be done using words that have clear meanings.

Well, potentially, but there are some areas where they can’t have unisex and so now we definitely have single sex (fingers crossed, won’t believe it till it happens):
Workplaces
Schools
Sports
Prisons
Hospitals

And presumably the places where service providers know that people want single sex but the also wanted to pretend that this was not affected by self ID:

Refuges
Rape counselling
Gym changing (some pools have mixed sex changing but I can’t see the ones that do t rushing to changing things)

The ones that are unclear which way service providers will go are toilets in restaurants/bars/theatres etc, and fitting rooms in shops.

Anything I missed?

As you well know, India has a cervix because he offered to show it to people on television, 🤮

Er... HOW exactly? 😂

Helleofabore · 22/04/2025 14:14

bigboykitty · 22/04/2025 12:39

Adult human female was always the case, but it's not what he used to say. Nor does the SC decision relate to this really; it just affirms the original meaning and intent of the Equality Act and that people cannot fantasise after the event that it actually meant something different and expect society and the law to be shaped around that misappropriation.

I am waiting for the shoe to drop with the rest of his line where he will add in that some male people are women. I expect that he will start saying that for the EA it is one thing and the rest of the time, he has a different meaning.

I’d really rather not think about that if you don’t mind 😂

It's just his usual word salad. He hasn't stated that women are biological females. He's still trying to appease the TWAW brigade.

Agreed, he's speaking to the party not us. With such a sizable number of Labour MP's being TRA's, he can't afford to say anything that will piss them off, because if he did and they left the party and joined Corbyn as Independents his parliamentary majority would disappear.

BBC headline now says ‘Keir Starmer does not believe trans women are women’.

It appears that is what his official spokesperson has said, not a direct quote from Sir Keir.

He's a lawyer. TW were women. Now, they're not.

They've never been women: Stonewall law git people breaking the actual rule

WallaceinAnderland · 22/04/2025 14:44

Transwomen are women
Transwomen are men and this is what I've always said

Animal Farm anyone?

The bottom few maybe impacted if they are new builds due to a change in the building regulations requiring single sex and unisex. Also if the employees use the same facilities as customers they quite possibly need to be covered - who knows.

If it’s a statement from his official spokesperson surely it IS a direct quote from Kier ?

EweSurname · 22/04/2025 14:49

Ooh single sex spaces not safe spaces for once

”Pressed over when the PM had changed his mind, his spokesman insisted the Labour government had been consistent that single sex spaces "are protected in law”

RedToothBrush · 22/04/2025 14:49

Kindersurprising · 22/04/2025 12:24

He said TWAW. I like to think he said that while under election pressure and this is his ‘real’ stance but who the fuck knows? They have no choice but to go along with it, otherwise the ex DPP will be up for interfering in judicial process. Although they could overrule it via an opposing Act of Parliament but they’re not. So that’s something.

BBC report it thta his exact wording was:

"a woman is a female adult, and in addition to that transwomen are women, and that is not just my view - that is actually the law".

and now he (apparently) says:

Asked if Sir Keir still believed that a transgender woman was a woman, the PM's official spokesman said: "No, the Supreme Court judgment has made clear that when looking at the Equality Act, a woman is a biological woman."
The spokesman added: "That is set out clearly by the court judgment."

So Keir Starmer can't hold a view unless he's either been tol by Stonewall or he's been told by a court.

Don't get me wrong, this is progress, but his lack of conviction and betrayal of women on this, is plain to see. Not only that but he's almost certainly made transwomen feel completely betrayed too.

So he's successfully managed to piss of both camps when, if he'd actually had the guts to say this before he wouldn't have done that.

We all know he's doing this, whilst quietly looking at the US and the UK opinion polls and realising that this is a complete vote loser - young people are less likely to swing as voters than middle aged women. (BTW this is also probably the reason the LD are being twits about this, because they think they can pick up some of that youth vote - I do think its likely strategic).

It appears that is what his official spokesperson has said, not a direct quote from Sir Keir.

His line is clearly that his statement referred to legal status, and that previously he was following Haldane.

I don’t think you will get much more than that.

He won’t apologise to Rosie Duffield because he won’t believe there is a political need. He will think that this matters hugely to sone people, but that most people don’t know who she is - and I suspect he is right.

The SC judgement happened because a few women worked very hard to take their case to court, not because of political will. Most politicians, including Conservatives don’t ant to spend time on this issue - if they did the SC wouldn’t have needed to clarify the legislation.

Well, clearly it has been said under instruction from him. What I meant was you won’t find a TV clip of him saying it.
