Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

That piece is so balanced and clear. Thank you, it’s uplifting after some other threads! And great to see common sense reporting.

MoistVonL · 20/04/2025 17:28

The Observer has been brilliant on this for years now. It’s so refreshing.

CarefulN0w · 20/04/2025 17:31

OMG that is wonderful to read. I wonder what the weekday staff will make of it?

Won't matter as of tomorrow. Observer won't be owned by The Guardian anymore

SpottedDonkey · 20/04/2025 17:33

My understanding is that most Observer editorials are written by Sonia Sodha. Which explains why this one is so good.

Appalonia · 20/04/2025 17:35

There's an option at the end of the article to email them with your thoughts. We should all do this!

And yes it is a v balanced article. We will see how it all pans out over the next few months tho...

As MoistVonL said, the Observer has been very good on this issue recently. And the Guardian has a separate editor. But in any case, ownership of the Observer transfers to Tortoise Media in 2 days' time.

The Guardian does have at least one good writer on this issue, Susanna Rustin ( https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/apr/17/clarity-uk-supreme-court-rights-of-women-campaigners )

At last, a moment of clarity – the UK supreme court has upheld the rights of women | Susanna Rustin

It is vital that we give credit to the tireless campaigners who brought us to this point, says Guardian writer Susanna Rustin

I’d forgotten that! What timing.

Hamabeed · 20/04/2025 18:04

Brilliant editorial. Have shared with numerous people and groups. I feel fucking great.

aylis · 20/04/2025 18:08

Refreshing to read something dealing clearly with the fact that it was about women's rights and women protections above all.

nutmeg7 · 20/04/2025 18:09

Sonia’s article archive (I hope)..

And Observer editorial (again, I hope..)

edited - nope, this is Susanna Rustin’s article

VeronicasMonocle · 20/04/2025 20:18

Great editorial, as is Sonia's opinion piece.

I noticed at the end of Sonia's opinion piece (not the editorial) she says it's her last regular column for the Observer. Her writing is great, and it's been so good to have her voice in a Guardian-adjacent publication (and I'm amazed and delighted the Susanna Rustin has been able to continue writing her columns for the Guardian without being cancelled!). I very much hope the Observer's move to Tortoise media doesn't change their editorial stance on this issue. I know the sale of the Observer has been controversial in many respects for non-gender related reasons.

SpottedDonkey · 20/04/2025 21:33

It’s not surprising that Sonia is leaving the Observer. She was one of the most prominent staffers campaigning against the sale to Tortoise. She’s also not short of other jobs, obviously.
