Hidden cameras used for voyeurism to be outlawed

Prosecutions will be possible even if no photo has been taken

Hidden cameras disguised as pens, buttons or water bottles will be made illegal if used to take intimate images of people without their consent, after dozens of female swimmers reported being filmed in mixed-sex changing rooms.

The government will make it a crime for equipment used to take voyeuristic images to be installed or adapted, with prosecutions possible even where no photo is taken.

Alex Davies-Jones, the victims minister, said women and girls were being “humiliated and degraded for the sick pleasure of certain men” and pledged to strengthen the law.

Why isn't the obvious solution of mandating the availability of single sex changing spaces being considered as the blindingly obvious answer to this problem?

I edited to say: Sorry, OP, thanks for the article. I realise this looks like I am having a go at you. That's not my intention at all. I am just so exasperated with dealing with the rank stupidity of pretending that there aren't some excellent reasons that women want to exclude men from some of their spaces.

How the fuck wasn’t this already illegal.

Redshoeblueshoe · 15/04/2025 18:25

I thought it was already illegal

I think it isn't just about perverts bringing in concealed cameras (or at least I hope so) because there are so many stories of hotel rooms, airbnb, and ........... who knows where else, where the owner or manager has installed hidden cameras.

Its just another of those things that some never would consider happens, but as we know nearly every aspect of life for women is constantly under threat from entitled men.

And all shows yet again, that gender neutral is in fact never neutral.

Ant woman who willingly or unwillingly uses these types of facilities is under thread.

Why do we have to keep on showing examples of this?

As per usual, this is one of the reasons school toilet doors now have a 5mm gap at the bottom. Which means there’s now more chance of girls being attacked unwitnessed and children not being rescued in time after collapsing through illness, self harm or drugs.

Ironically it doesn’t stop the voyeurism as the privacy gives the voyeur plenty of time to set up a hidden camera.

I think it is already illegal but there is no specific criminal offence that deals with taking and sharing images. It’s obviously become such a problem that now they want to make it a specific offence.

To convict someone of voyerism you have to establish that the primary motivator was sexual arousal. If the reason for the illicit recording was say revenge, then that’s not voyerism. Expanding the law to take away that requirement can only be a good thing.

This makes me worry about the outcome of tomorrow's FWS judgment even more.

It’s very easy to hide them, they make ones so small you would never see them unless looking.
