At last police take theft seriously (sarcasm)

I can't quite believe the epic levels of incompetence in this one.

History teacher Vanessa Brown, 50, spent seven-and-a-half hours in a custody cell on March 26 this year, following a claim she had stolen two iPads which were traced to her mother’s house in Cobham, Surrey.

Yet it transpired that the two devices belonged to her daughters, and Ms Brown had merely confiscated them to encourage them to focus on their schoolwork, a fact Surrey Police has now acknowledged. She was reported to police by her ex-husband, LBC understands.

Wow! I am pretty sure if someone ipad actually gets stolen there's nothing more than a crime number.
Happy to be proven wrong.

Does anyone want to bet the police man was mates with the Ex?

On the plus side - this is absolutely clear -
Following these enquiries, officers discovered that the iPads belonged to the woman’s children and that she was entitled to confiscate items from her own children.

When my kids argue that I cannot confiscate their things - I can show them this.

And they want women to trust the police.

How can we do this when they repeatedly demonstrate that they act against women.

Rightsraptor · 11/04/2025 12:03

I can't be the only one thinking that the man who made the complaint should be arrested for wasting police time.

I was wondering who this man is and why he reported them stolen?

I can only think he's an ex (possibly the girls father?) with an axe to grind but fully ackowledge I'm jumping to conclusions with minimal information!

Cosmosforbreakfast · 11/04/2025 12:14

What kind of example is this giving the children? That if Mum makes a rule, the children are to disregard it and call Police. He should be arrested and charged with wasting Police time.

What the hell, this is scary.

The police knew that the ipads belonged to her dds before she was bailed with conditions that prevented her from seeing or speaking to her dds. This isn't just police overreach but parental alienation by the police/exh

NPET · 11/04/2025 13:03

I have no love for the police, but I suggest in this case that the ex is to blame, whether or not he was in cahoots with them.

SparklyGlitterballs · 11/04/2025 13:06

I too suspect it was an ex trying to cause trouble. The fact he could provide tracking information to enable plod to trace the devices to this woman's mother's house indicates he's close to this somehow. I wonder if he had a tracking app on them so that he could keep tabs on the ex?

SeethingHarpie · 11/04/2025 13:17

Whatever happens now, and regardless of why it happened, the ex-husband got what he wanted, didn’t he? He got to punish her.

She was in a cell for hours, finally bailed and legally not permitted to see her own daughters.

What a vicious, vindictive, miserable shit of a man and father to do that to the mother of your daughters.

I hope he is charged, and if the police involved are “mates” of the dipshit, I hope they are suitably disciplined.

A female manager at work about 10 years ago was arrested at her home one night, taken to prison, strip searched there and held in a cell overnight. Her computers were confiscated. She was going through a messy divorce and her ex had told the police that she was abusing their children and had images of this on her computers. She was able to return home the next day - I assume her divorce solicitor helped with this.
I am curious as to whether the police immediately believe a similar accusation made by a wilfe against her ex husband.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 11/04/2025 15:03

'Surrey Police said a search operation for the devices started after a man in his 40s reported a possible theft, having already been called out to a “concern for safety” on March 26.'

Who was responsible for calling them out on March 26th, was that the ex as well, because it's time he was looked into if it was. Is he harassing her?

Yes, I agree - it's really shocking.
That was just a poor attempt at humour on my part. Sorry.

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 12/04/2025 08:55

Everything about this story is appalling.

If the exH lied about her, why hasn’t he been arrested? If he didn’t lie or mislead the police, just admitted she’d confiscated her daughters’ iPads, why did they treat that as a crime? What excuse did the police have for arresting her? Or for questioning her daughter at school?

And the bigger picture: why the hell are police wasting time on petty family disputes while ignoring real crime?

This looks very like a personal vendetta. And if police are colluding in this, they should not be in the police force.

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 12/04/2025 08:59

Sorry that got into italics for some reason.
