Misogynation by Laura Bates

Has anyone read this? I'm just listening to the foreword and my head is spinning from, when giving examples of misogyny covering, she includes 'when a trans woman is bullied in the workplace' then goes on to mention how all of these examples are all interconnected, before stating 'we can't tackle any one of these incidents in isolation, we can't improve the representation of women on FTSE 100 boards or in our government without tackling the mindless, racist, gender stereotyping'.
I don't understand how someone supposedly raising an awareness of an issue faced by women can include men who identify as women and then decry gender stereotyping in the same sentence.
My instant reacting was to send it back to Audible but that felt a bit knee jerk, but I'm also concerned that not seeing the contradiction between those statements could mean any research or conclusion is built on sand.
Has anyone read this, is it worth continuing?

Everyday Sexism Laura Bates? How disappointing.

And a somewhat unfortunate choice of title, too. I can see what she was going for, but it's awkwardly close to miscegenation.

Laura hás always been TWAW which kind of makes her work on misogyny somewhat pointless

Thank you for your responses, I'm trying to continue but there's a nagging thought in the back of my mind 'why didn't she mention transmen, who actually could be victims of misogyny rather than transwomen?', so much so that I've just gone back to check, and it's definitely transwomen that she's including.

One of the TWAW brigade, in Scotland I think, used the term 'transmisogyny' which really peed me off, everything woman have they want, even misogyny. 🤬

😩

That’s disappointing from her

I read it all recently. Found the element you mention difficult for the reasons you highlight, but it didn't undermine the whole for me - I'd say the book was eye-opening, but my eyes can't open much wider by now! It's another useful resource overall, in particular I think because it's much more accessible and bitesize than many of the recent magnificent GC tomes, so a good alternative medium to raise awareness. The trans element sometimes felt a bit "tick-box" to me - it felt like, not so much true disciple as "unthinkingly kind"? But I didn't look into it any more deeply. Regardless, I'd highly recommend the book overall. Yes, it's irritating and potentially distressing (why why why is it never even so much as suggested that being redefined and recategorised ourselves has the potential to be every bit as upsetting to women as being misgendered is to some trans people?! wait, I know! misogynation!) but it's important and I'm grateful for her input and ongoing projects nonetheless.

I have had no time for LB since back when she had a Guardian column and wrote the most ridiculous tripe.

When people BTL used to disagree, even about her use of statistics, they were, of course, deleted.

Agree. I can’t really take her seriously.

"why why why is it never even so much as suggested that being redefined and recategorised ourselves has the potential to be every bit as upsetting to women as being misgendered is to some trans people?!"

Well said @Catiette because I get viscerally upset when the word women is deliberately not used or prefixed with cis but I'm not supposed to care because "inclusivity".

I haven't read the book but I know what you mean. Laura Bates has done a lot of good work. Everyday Sexism was a great project. It brought a lot of awareness.
But I'd find it really irritating to read a book that condemns gender stereotyping in one sentence and then in the next uses the extremely sexist gender stereotyping of the trans movement as unassailable fact.
It'd be like reading a book about physics by someone who keeps dropping astrology into the mix as if everyone believes in it. Just weird and it does make you start thinking the author is a twit. Hard to keep interested in reading at that point.
