So Mumsnet are asking us to complete a survey. They seem to think that there are 3 sexes - Male, Female and Intersex!!

I wonder what’s the purpose of the collection of our personal data?

teawamutu · 09/04/2025 16:31

There's a thread in Site Stuff where the utter bollocks of this has been repeatedly pointed out. They don't care, and are doubling down.

I'm not filling it in and would suggest no-one with any interest in upholding reality does, either.

Thanks - I hadn’t seen this as the survey only ‘popped up’ for me today! Its total madness.

Yep looked at it ages ago and stopped at that question!

Toseland · 09/04/2025 18:20

FGS Mumsnet you are embarrassing us!

IwantToRetire · 09/04/2025 19:01

There's already been a thread about this!

MagpiePi · 09/04/2025 21:12

…sigh

Can we just pretend we’ve had the pages and pages of valid explanations about ‘intersex’ being a disrespectful and outdated term, and actually not being a biological reality?

Greyskybluesky · 09/04/2025 21:41

Bobbymoore123 · 09/04/2025 21:01

Intersex people are an incontrovertible biological reality.

I can't find the bit of that article that refers to "intersex".
I do see references to male and female infants though.

Nowhere does it mention "intersex". That is also the author's manuscript.

The final, edited, published paper is here:

Disorders of sex development

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1521693417301955?via%3Dihub

The birth of a child with a DSD is generally not a medical emergency. Rather, the birth of a baby with ambiguous genitalia is bewildering, alarming, and considered to be a social emergency. Everyone wants to know if the baby is a boy or a girl. In many instances, the parents are told the sex of the infant from the prenatal ultrasound findings. Until the sex of rearing has been established, the infant should be referred to as “your baby.”

  • There are Disorders of Sex Development in females
  • There are Disorders of Sex Development in males
  • There is no "third sex" or "intersex".

"Intersex" is, if anything, a political identity:

The Invention of Intersex

"As someone born with Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome, I had until recently felt fairly neutral about the term Intersex as I could see its value as a political label and as a way of understanding the bodies of those of us living with complex variations of sex development – and I have found it amazing to see young activists embracing and celebrating their bodily differences under an intersex flag.
However, the recent appropriation, misrepresentation and even fetishizing of ‘intersex’ has led to me increasingly believing that the term is doing more harm than good.

I am also increasingly contacted by young people, adults and new parents that have never met anyone else with the same variation of sex development, possibly as they do not feel represented by current activism that focuses only on those who identify as intersex. Peer support can be hugely valuable – and I would like this to be available for all, regardless of how they identify.

I do not mean this essay to be a criticism of people using the term intersex to describe themselves, however, I am critical of using intersex to describe babies and children, who do not have a choice."

The Invention of Intersex

The below essay is very quickly written and still very much a work in progress, but I felt it was important to share some of this information as part of Intersex Awareness Day.

I’m not filling in the ‘census’ . They have enough of our data already surely without asking for more.
